This hit me pretty hard - it really captures an abuse that is probably all too common

It makes me a little uncomfortable, which I think it kind of should. Brilliant job and love how you got so much across. Is it conceptualized from personal experience?

This is dark. In two different ways.

abigaelrose t1_it9ne0y wrote

Can you explain the two ways? Sorry I'm daft.

anatoli_smolin t1_ita113u wrote

I think because the meaning behind it is dark, and also the image itself is dark and a little bit hard to see.

My guess on the interpretation is even though he calls her his little princess he still treats her like a doormat because women are objects in the eyes of some men even today.

EdanVix t1_it9i3n5 wrote

This hits home. Just had to process this recently.

You're the "little princess," showered with praises for how wonderful you are. They'll buy you gifts and spoil you. They love to tell you how the brag to their friends and other family about you.

But those gifts come with a price. Your time, your energy, you happiness and well being. You want to stand up for yourself? You're being ungrateful. Look how much they shower you with love and materialism.

You think they're treating your sibling unfairly? You're spoiled and rotten for all the praise they give you and now you think you know better than them.

You want to be recognized for your own merits? "That's cute. But you're just daddy's little girl, and you'll still be that cute little girl in the dress that daddy bought you. Now go sit quietly in your chair. This is why we didn't used to let you girls think."

I donā€™t get it. Is this hinting at sexual abuse?

14

Bookworm_Hairstylist t1_it7hoda wrote

My impression is abuse in some form. Or maybe even the weight of the father's expectations keeping the daughter from feeling free to do what she wants with her life. It could go a few different ways.

nanamsk OP t1_it7ieh2 wrote

it's about both a form of physical and mental abuse. it's up for interpretation, as i think people should be able to identify with it in whichever form they feel like

Your drawing is beautiful. I especially like how well the hands are drawn. I don't mean this in a condescending or judgy way at all, I'm just concerned, are you okay? Are you in harm's way? If there is ongoing abuse in your life, maybe I can provide some sources to help you?

Obviously this is hitting people in the feels. But just to point out that your image seems dimly lit, not the artwork, but the photo of it. Unless thatā€™s the vibe youā€™re going for, consider using a photo box to take pictures of your drawing.

What was the point of this comment? Why do men love to pick on women with dyed hair? What about your life has caused you to feel so small and insignificant that you felt motivated enough to leave a rude, misogynistic comment on a painting that has nothing to do with you?

Let me make it clear: your comment was not so offensive that I felt compelled to respond. But it was so low effort, overused, and unfunny, that I genuinely seek to understand how someone could think the energy used to type it out was worth it.

Where I live there's a men's clinic whose commercials suggest that their erectile dysfunction treatments are the only valid response to some hypothetical person eating too many soybeans and thereby diminishing masculinity and destroying society.

Same vibes.
