That is a steel plate with electric burn marks on it in the shape of a dragon fly, the colors are a patina formed by air exposure as the molten steel cooled in that spot.

Beautiful.
Looks very tactile. How large of a plate is that?
Nearatree t1_jdnnfxn wrote
Not the OP so I can't say for sure but I'd guess 12-14 gauges because you can see some warping from how the light is hitting the corners. I'd estimate that the wingspan is gonna be six or seven inches. No idea what dimensions they cut the plate though.

That's pretty close! You've got a good eye.

how did you manage to get the value changes?
also, was that a freehand work, or did you have a reference?
btw, excellent work.
NoSleepAtSea OP t1_jdmwkah wrote
The value changes are heat tint. When I want to have bigger, more colourful patches, I turn up the amps. If I run clusters of beads in close succession, that also brings out the tint because the concentration of heat. I sketched out the design using an electric engraver so I would have something to follow once I had my hood down. Thank you!

another question then: how long did it take you to learn and practice those techniques?

I've been working as a pipe welder/fabricator for approaching two years now, and I was an artist before that. Combining the two is a new thing!

Metal work art is awesome, I really love it when people use the heart treating to colour it like you did

go for it.
price your art according to the local market.
if that seems to low, find a larger market.
keep up the good work!

nice job, that must have taken some time to get right. I never have the patience to get colors this consistent. how much time did this take you? are you using a pulse setting?
NoSleepAtSea OP t1_jdwcf9d wrote
Thank you! I think the colors are as much luck as skill at the moment, though I keep playing around. Yes, pulse setting for a lot of it. It took me most of a quiet day at work.
