Sure, clouds are like water and boats go on water. That's easy. From the millions of artists among the hundreds and hundreds of millions of people that have never been exposed to Pink Floyd's Endless River cover... sure. It can be independent several times over.

But THESE elements with THIS vantage and specifically THIS title? No. GTFO. And it's not multiple discovery. It's f&#!ing art. Reimagined art.

Why does the piece look so horribly jpeged when zoomed in apart from certain parts of the lighting? Like, here, it looks like you sloppily drew over the image a few times with a lowered opacity brush. Here is another example. It looks very inconsistent with the rest of the piece and I'm curious as to why you did this.

EDIT: Seems like you previously posted this piece to a photo manipulation sub, but without the window frame. Three years ago, you posted it and said upfront that it was photo manipulation.

29

canaridante t1_j047rkz wrote

I think it's because it's a photo that was edited, and the boat is the part that was drawn. Zoom in on the boat and you will see the difference in the quality.

The inconsistency you talk about is probably a result of low quality photo being used as a base.

Why are you getting downvoted this is correct... Is it in the rules that "digital" means it was painted?

2

Ayacyte t1_j05203i wrote

I also believe op should be upfront, but labeling it "digital" isn't incorrect. And they aren't hiding it in previous posts either. "Digital" isn't limited to digital drawing/painting and 3d work. It can be digital photography, photomanipulation, photobashing, AR, generative artwork, whatever.

Kirill_vfx OP t1_j047mu4 wrote

Yea i know it looks bad when you zoom it. It was my second peace done in Photoshop and I didn’t know how to do good quality projects. Sorry about that

zapolight t1_j037og7 wrote

This is just a Pink Floyd album with one word changed. I know you probably did come up with it on your own (or saw the album and didn't fully realize it, then it came back to you) but it's just too similar, if a student turned this into me I'd get them for plagarism lol

18

TheSeaworthyFew t1_j03dqf8 wrote

Honestly the connection would never have occurred to me. I know some famous Pink Floyd songs and that one album cover with the refracted light, plus vaguely that poster with all the butts (which is a bunch of album covers I guess, though if you asked me to describe the covers being depicted to you without looking the only one I’d know for sure would be the refracted light and mayyybe the brick wall)

I’m just saying this is a more obscure reference than I think you realize

Images that sweep out to the horizon point are easily described as endless. Vistas of clouds out an airplane window really do look like big floating bodies of water. I’ve been staring out airplane windows since I was a kid, imagining boats and islands and etc and I didn’t need Pink Floyd’s help to get there

I had to Google to find the image you’re talking about because I had never seen it before and I don’t think I’m all that unusual in never having seen it before

Edited to add: the album you’re talking about came out in 2014 and that’s kind of fascinating to me, because if you’d asked me I would have guessed that Pink Floyd stopped putting out original music by like the early 1980s at the latest

Raise your hand if you knew there was a new Pink Floyd album within the last ten years

12

Frans4Life t1_j0421wc wrote

even if they have similar components, look at the differences.

the colours are way more saturated to give a less realistic and dreamlike feel.

it's framed as just observing the expanse of cloud and the boatperson fishing, through a window. In contrast the journey through the sky the album cover invokes by having the boatperson actively paddling and facing towards the horizon.

endless sea implies a purposeless drifting while river connotates a persistent forward momentum which I think fit the narrative of respective pieces well.

12

keepmeworm t1_j05vhvl wrote

I had to google this album cover because of the multiple people talking about how this is "just a pink floyd album cover". As someone who has never seen that album cover before, yes the concepts are similar but they don't look near similar enough visually to go to to the level of saying its plagiarized. Its literally a person in a boat on some clouds, I wasn't aware pink floyd owned that concept. There are many differences between the images, just because the main concept is the same doesn't mean they straight up copied it. The angle and position of the person in the boat isn't even the same. In my unbiased opinion there are even components to their creation I like more than the album cover. Like the colors for one, and having the composition framed inside the window.

2

cjlutera t1_j06i241 wrote

It's the same usage of the word endless that makes it suspect. Endless river and endless sea. That's a mighty coincidence.

1

zapolight t1_j0709fj wrote

That's what I'm saying. Also, it's not the most original Pink Floyd design so I totally think that OP came up with it on his own, but the use of endless is just too similar.

It's a photomanip so the picture of the window might have had a wing in it that the artist edited out, but not entirely.

Im thinking they got a window seat and had no choice lol, also if it is a cropped wing, then the remnant is just an editing error rather than a conscious choice.

Sure they have the same sort of theme, but how on earth can you call this plagiarism they are completely different. Come off it

16

EternalNocturnal- t1_j03zb8i wrote

It's not just the theme, they have almost the same name also "Endless Sea" vs "Endless River".

So if someone would paint a tongue and lips logo and call it "Rolling Granite", would you be so naive that you would say the same thing? "Oh, sure they have the same sort of theme, but how can you call this plagiarism?"

kidcool97 t1_j047cbw wrote

There are only so many words to describe an infinite body of water replaced by clouds. The concept of boats sailing on things that aren’t water is not a unique or new thing. Clouds seem an obvious choice.

Spr1nt87 t1_j041ri5 wrote

3

EternalNocturnal- t1_j0449yd wrote

I am not talking about the legal aspect in this case, I am not a copyright lawyer so I don't know enough to comment on that, I just point out that this is almost certain plagiarism, there is almost zero chance that you paint a picture very similar to an album cover of one of the biggest bands in the history and then even names it almost the same. I mean sure, some people get struck by lightning twice, but what are the odds?

−5

Ayacyte t1_j0549a6 wrote

Hypothetically, if it's similar but not using the source material in any way except inspiration, why does it matter? Tons of artists are inspired. Also a boat on clouds is hardly plagiarism, there's tons of depictions of those in media
