You need fixative between layers, I using Sennelier, it’s my favourite For me waves are better on smooth paper than on sanded one

How do you get the true white when using pastels? When ever I try to put white over another it mixes and muddies

No use white at all, the lighters pink, yellow, green, blue… or you can try watercolour titanium white put on brush and spray with finger where it needed
