There seems to be some suspicion that this piece is AI, I've tried to respond to these comments with a screenshot as proof, however the sub has removed them due to the rule of no external links. If anybody would like proof in a DM, including a link to other pieces I did in this series, I would be happy to provide them.

Each piece was textured and rendered using either Cinema4D or Adobe Dimension and were done as a nod to my mom who has a massive collection of blue and white china.

I think people are reacting to your attribution in the title. ā€œDigitalā€ is usually used to say something was drawn on a computer rather than modeled. My guess is that no one would have said anything if you had used something like ā€œ3D renderā€.

13

bonersoup4 t1_j0la0op wrote

The medium is digital art. There is nothing wrong with the title.

8

grumpyporcini t1_j0mr287 wrote

Of course, youā€™re right, but thereā€™s no harm in being more specific. Myself and others were initially confused as to wether it was a drawing or a render, and I had to check the comments to find out.

Definitely. Saw this exact same idea where someone applied this porcelain pattern to darth vaderā€™s helmet in an AI prompt. OP probably didnā€™t create this image,.

should be but ai is hitting the point where its as good as some of the best artists on the planet. once that fingers thing is fixed yall really wont be able to tell anymore, i know i barely can.

I think it should, if it is indeed AI. I could be wrong, but the idea is weak anyway.

You should call it 'Delft Civilian'. Which would be a pun, because a (ham)burger and a civilian are both called 'burger' in Dutch (homonym)

Is this done in Photoshop?

5

phatcan OP t1_j0igvua wrote

Cinema4D and Adobe Dimension for model & render, but the texture itself was prepared (not created) in Photoshop. The pattern is not my original work.

10

Oomoo_Amazing t1_j0m6r8b wrote

What's your opinion on AI generated art that is made up of other people's art in the same way that this image uses somebody else's texture? I'm not attacking, just asking. I can see similarities and I'm wondering whether you agree.

1

phatcan OP t1_j0mb3p9 wrote

I think the concept of AI as a tool is cool, as long as it is recognized as AI I think people make the assumption that it's a product of multiple different pieces by multiple different artists so I don't necessarily see AI as dishonest or stealing to those who understand how it works. I will always credit the parts of my work that aren't 100% original, although I admittedly don't know the origin of this pattern. Possibly an unknown Babushka who has long passed away. I think using other peoples art to create more art is subjective, if somebody mashes several pieces of art together, is it their piece? It's their compilation/composition but the credit leans 99% on the original creators. If an artist made a more unique composition that includes another artist's work in a minor way, as long as credit is given where necessary I can appreciate all creators' contributions and the piece as a whole. To me there are grey areas, but I advocate always to allot credit where and when it is due. This is my individual view and I expect that other people may see it differently, and that's okay. As long as nobody is benefiting by taking somebody else's credit then no harm no foul I think.

1

Oomoo_Amazing t1_j0mi7ff wrote

That's a fair and reasonable opinion and I appreciate it! I think the difficulty with AI, the decent stuff not some crappy app, is that it would be impossible to credit every source of work that went into one image because a) it's probably a LOT, and b) the computer might not even know.
