I usually recommend they get psych help. Last one I spoke with via voice then had a blackmail attempt.

Be compassionate and listen, and remember to set boundaries for how much you are able to handle, it's not your job to make a depressed person feel better but you can offer an ear and kind words. If they want to find a therapist or psychiatrist you can offer to help with the search since depression usually causes brain fog and complete lack of motivation. That's my take on it as a person who has been inconsolably depressed before. The person with depression has to be trying to help themselves too. I hope that helps!

I've noticed that people who are sad are in pain and need help. It never hurts to try help people. Positivity in all cases instead of actually approaching with reality and a realistic perspective likely leads to many unnecessary deaths in the USA. One of the things I've gathered from knowing sad people is they have more world and life perspective than was expressed in your comment.

I have a friend who broke up with his girlfriend, he has been talking in a low voice ever since, he's always aggressive and really low in iq, but he's still been my friend for years and the idiot has been damaging our relationship because of his ridiculous depressive thoughts.

Ignore all warning signs and keep relationships surface level as possible. Don't get emotionally attached because it could end badly.
