KooKoo was Debbie Harry's solo debut, recorded while Harry and (then boyfriend) Chris Stein were taking a year long break from Blondie.

H.R. Giger's artwork for KooKoo was based on a photograph of Harry taken by the renowned photographer Brian Aris. Giger created several variations of the cover (another of which is seen on the album's inner sleeve) in what Debbie Harry described as a combination of punk, acupuncture and sci-fi. Harry stated that the album title actually came to her after she saw Giger's completed work - it was an integral part of the album project, for her.

“Punk, acupuncture, & sci-fi” I love that! I also love how big of an impact it had on the album in contrast to art as an afterthought (as it seems to be a lot of the time)
