It may be sacrilege to say it, but I think Lord of the Rings worked better as a movie. It made them cut out all of the long rambly bits that don't move the plot, especially most songs.

Shrek. The movies have almost nothing in common with the small children's book it's based on.

The Godfather closely matches the book and is an exceptional adaptation.
