No. The restaurant should have to pay a living wage and not rely on the generous nature of patrons, once the economy gets worse you lose those tips.

fuck no, its the employers job to pay My salary, not the customers, tipping just allows The rich to get richer and The poor get poorer.

No,

As a Brit we find it weird, There are some professions where it's optional to leave a tip but that is on the expectation of receiving great service.

If they are working then they should have a livable salary without resorting to tips to make up the difference.

If an office worker was fined each day they weren't smiling at their cubicle then it would be fair, Why are fast food workers somehow penalised?

it's terrible. Literally a scam. Companies don't pay their workers as much so they rely on customers tips.

No. It's mostly an excuse for big companies to pay their employees poorly to increase their own profits.

But, since I'm American, I do honor it when I go eat at a restaurant. ~20% unless service was absolutely horrible.

Absolutely, now I would recommend 15% more for me please

No one should feel obligated to tip, but if the service is good, I usually do.

It’s not a thing where I live, waiters are paid a substantially salary and do their job correctly or are fired, people don’t have to do a lot of math as a group as to what to pay, and nobody ever pay by cash anyway.

Why does this get asked daily? No I don't tip for jobs I can do myself

I just wish more people knew how the tip credit system actually works, people working legally don't go home on payday with less than minimum wage whether you tip or not. Employer covers the difference if you don't make enough in claimed tips for the pay period

Where are you from? That is not true in all US states

The American no, but the Brazilian yes, here tipping is totally optional because of unions and decent wages, the flat rate is 10% and you only pay if you had a great service feel comfortable in paying.

No delivery of food to a person is about as bottom of the skill set there is. And I had girls in my life that made 100 an hour for doing what again?

Nope. If you can’t afford to pay your staff a living wage and rely on the customer to do this, you do not have a viable business model. Restaurants all over the world have reasonable prices and staff that make a living wage.

Tipping is exploitive in nature and is effectivelyprostitution ones self to make ends meet. If a server doesn't smile enough or look sexy enough, they dont make as many tips. Its essentially slave labor, at the whims of assholes who can choose to not leave a tip becausethey think your ass is too big or boobs too small. It predominantly impacts women and people of color. Employers should pay a living wage to their employees instead of shirking responsibility and making customers pay it, opening their staff to harrasment and sexual assults

Yes worker's make to little base pay

Flaky-Fellatio t1_iyfe0zd wrote

Absolutely not. It's an asshole subsidy that creates a situation of artificially low menu prices subsidized by nice people who tip higher.

Yes and because a lot of people depend on them

I think that’s kind of the main issue. If the employers pay their employees a decent wage, they shouldn’t have to depend on them.
