One day at a time with good friends who stuck by me and lots and lots of music

Depends on the person. Some mend over time, some mend with music, some mend with hobbies. Though some never mend and die from it. Those that don't mend or die probably grow a little colder to the world.

It never heals fully, memories of the feeling you had in the moment stay under your skin.

I just tried to forget, and I remind myself it's better this way. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have met my actual partner

First is the grief then loneliness and hoeing around. Then even more loneliness and sadness cus no one compares. Lots of comfort food, drinking/smoking. Looking and feeling like shit. Feeling hopeless and sorry for yourself. Crying randomly. Then hoeing around some more...slowly your heart aches less, you realise that the outside world or another person is not going to give you what you need. You look at the things you neglected while being in the sweet oblivion of love and also the shattered pieces from when your heart broke...and you pick them up, one by one. In this process, you heal. Your heart won't be the same that it was before, but it's alright.
