Looking for a digital thermometer that lasts

(the kind that checks people's temperature, specifically adults)

Looking for a decent one, ideally:

  • Quick read time
  • non proprietary or built in batteries you can't replace
  • non tiny display the cheap ones have
  • no reliance on disposable pieces, e.g. some thermometers have disposable plastic covers you put on the probe before checking temperature
  • Reputable brand is a nice to have (I was looking at Brauns and was surprised by some of the reviews)
  • an accurate one would be nice šŸ™‚

Vicks makes a basic one with a large readout and easy to replace battery. Even with little kids ours has been working perfectly for years. Theyā€™re about $10 and are sold at drugstores and grocery stores.

The two good models are the ā€˜speed readā€™ and the ā€˜comfort flexā€™ versions. The ā€˜rapid readā€™ one (itā€™s gray instead of blue) is terrible. We had one and got rid of it.

The Exergen temporal artery thermometer is basically the same one my daughterā€™s pediatrician or UCSF hospital uses, just without the metal construction and disposable caps for sanitary purposes a medical setting requires. Thatā€™s why it costs $30 instead of $200 for the professional version.

Lavatools Javelinā€¦had mine for 10yrs. Magnetic in the keeps it on the side of the fridge, out of sight but within reach.

I've had terrible luck with digital thermometers, including having a couple that were off by several degrees. I've had name brands like Braun and Bosch, and other brands as well, all were troublesome. I gave up in 2020 and went back to a regular old analogue thermometer, it always works and is always accurate.
