They have a lifetime free repair or replacement policy. Just because you aren’t willing to send it in for repairs doesn’t mean they are lying.

I just sent my daughters backpack I. To them after she stupidly took a pair of scissors to it to unstick a zipper. She cut the living shit out of it. I sent it in and it came back in two weeks, repaired and better then new. They would have replaced it if they couldn’t fix it. It cost nothing on my end.

I had one of their backpacks I used all through 6 years of college, gave it to my other kid who proceeded to treat it like shit and ripped and tore it up so bad it wasn’t usable. Sent it into them and like the other one they sent it back in better then new shape. That thing was 13 years old at that point. He still has it and uses it quite often.

Sounds like BIFL to me.

Agree—it’s great. I had a roller backpack from 4th grade until 10th grade. Used it every day and put it through a lot. When it got rolled over in the school parking lot, I sent it in and they replaced it with a new one (apologizing that the fabric from my old one was no longer available). Used the same backpack from them for four years of college and still for lugging things around. Those things are BIFL

Chances are it will still be deemed under warranty for repair/replacement. However any limited edition pieces or fabrics may not be repaired with the same, or if they go the full replacement route it will likely not be a limited edition bag.

Oh I’ll be sending it in for repair. But the process has left me super frustrated. I remember Jansport being of good quality when I was young. But to have it fail so far and require 4-6 weeks of time to repair. I essentially have to buy a new backpack while I am waiting for this to be repaired.

It’s a 1/2 page form, mostly name and address so they can return it to you, shove it in a box and you’re done. Like I said, I literally just got one back Saturday after only two weeks, so their six week estimate is probably max time. They had to repair a cut flap, replace two torn netting pockets with stronger netting, and replace a zipper my daughter cut in two and they still got it back to me in two weeks. I doubt you’re little handle restitch will take that long.

BIFL doesn't mean it will last forever. It means it can be maintained and or repaired. Things that get used break. Those broken things can be repaired. That makes it BIFL.

While they technically do have a lifetime warranty, it is a limited lifetime warranty. Most of the time they’ll take care of you, but not always.

Only unaltered and unmodified items and original workmanship are covered. This warranty does not cover damage caused by accident, improper care, negligence, normal wear and tear, or the natural breakdown of colors and materials over extended time and use. Damage not covered under warranty may be repaired for a reasonable rate and a fee will be charged for return shipping.

Jansport repaired it 4 times over 25 years for broken zippers and general tears on the shoulder strap and pack. I sent it in, told them how I was using it, and every time got it back with a nice note. Finally my shoulders needed a break, so it's retired. I had a Jansport-like Outdoor Products bag I purchased for a day's minimum wage pay when I was 12; Mom thought I was nuts. Over 15 years, they repaired it once and replaced it twice. On the fourth attempt, they objected. I can't blame them, they were honorable, even if they didn't seem to honor their "lifetime warranty" literally.

I've revisited their warranty statement in recent years; they seem to have reconsidered, and seem recommitted to the BiFL warranty concept. Not sure its worth it for many with today's shipping costs, but if I was looking for a new BiFL book bag-backpack, I'd give them a chance alongside Jansport.

DraconianDebate t1_ir2kh6o wrote

I would expect the retailer to cover a product that breaks within 3 weeks honestly, which is likely their own expectation. Most places, even in the US, there would be a law to prevent the retailer in question from refusing a return if the product is defective.

Also looking at that picture I would expect that some serious force was used to rip that strap, as it looks like there are broken threads. Maybe it was a force it should have withstood but there is a limit to what some cloth & thread can handle and kids are destructive.

First thing I would do is just double check the return policy of the company you bought it from and maybe consider talking to a different employee about it. Maybe the guy you talked to was just an idiot. Its the retailers job to fix this not the manufacturer, Jansport didn't sell it to you and doesn't have another bag right there to give you as a replacement like the retailer does.

When it comes to a manufacturer, I would say that a willingness to fix the issue with the bag and send it back is reasonable and what most people would expect of their warranties. The fact that they have on occasion provided replacements instead of repairs doesn't obligate them to offer that to you, or offer you a loaner as that's never something they agreed to provide you.
