I've been in the market for a wool coat for a few years and have narrowed down the style I'm looking for the the Ralph Lauren Walker or Reefer coat. The size, shape, and location of the lapels, length of the coats, and them being single breasted with buttons is what drew me to them. I'm looking for buy it for life brands that make coats similar to these two. It's easy to find similar coats but most are like the originals, polyester wool blends that will wear out in just a few seasons. I'm working with a budget of around $500 give or take.

Why are you assuming that these are not BIFL? The BIFL jacket makers we often talk about here do not make this type that I am aware of.

Good point. I assumed they weren’t buy it for life for two reasons. 1. These are from a designer brand, and I often feel that with designers your paying for the name not the quality. 2. They’re “wool blend” and before making my post I looked at previous posts here to see if my question had been answered. I noticed many people said wool blends wear faster than 100% wool coats, so I thought with the added polyester maybe these coats would wear too fast.

Your designer idea needs adjustment. SOME designers are that way, but not all and not all lines. Ralph Lauren suits at Macy's are jank. Ralph Lauren blue or purple label suits are middle to God tier. Never assume, learn and buy smartly. I am ignorant as to your examples can offer no opinion. And that form factor is likely BIFL as dress coats aren't exactly a high wear item unless you plan on wearing them at your job in the foundry smelting steel! :) I have a similar men's overcoat for dress wear I got on eBay for like $40 made by Whogivesashit made from Whogivesadamn material and it will likely last my lifetime.

Two name brands that have this style of coat are: Oak+Fort and Anine Bing. This isn’t my style of coat, but I have seen women vouch for these two brands’ longevity. They claim they have had items from these stores for years and there is no pilling. If you select a coat and click on “materials and care,” the websites will show the fabric material composition. Some are 100% wool and some are not.

On a side note, I have had incredible good fortune with Etsy. I find everything I buy from Eastern Europe is well made. You can read the description to see if it’s 100% wool and look at the reviews to see if people say it’s quality. When looking for quality items, I always look at the 1 star reviews.
