I'm looking for a winter coat to wear all winter. I get cold easily and I live in New England in the US, but I don't want to look like I'm dressed for the arctic. I want it to look good for my office job because I'm planning on getting a promotion. I think the Patagonia coats look nice, but I don't know which one is the best. Maybe another brand is just as good? Thank you!

None of the actually warm coats are really going to look "right" as officewear if you are in a professional setting. My vote is with Land's End Stadium Jacket, but I chatted with one of the facilities peeps because I felt bad tracking in mounds of snow all the way to my desk where I had a boot tray and they showed me a coat closet right by the hallway entrance that I'd never noticed and apparently neither had anyone else. I tried for years wearing nice wool/cashmere blends and scarves and nice insulated leather boots, but I just landed up with five shawls and scarves wrapped around me and still cold, which looks a bit more bag lady than finance dept.

When boss did see me going out the front door, he was more impressed that I actually looked dressed for the weather! The other nice thing about going with one massive jacket is that you don't need layers of sweaters under it. You slip off your coat, swap shoes, and boom you are set! And your nice leather shoes aren't getting so much salt and slush.

Cool, thanks for the recommendation! It does look stylish. And warm! I'm going to check whether it would fit since I'm 5'2. I'll definitely keep in mind something warm. I think I'll probably either go with the stadium jacket or a Patagonia one.. and maybe find a store to try them on.

Patagonia down sweater or hoody are perfectly fine for office casual and very warm for anything from.maybe 5-10 below freezing up to 60. Not the most waterproof jackets In the world so if that matters maybe try a different one.

I had a friend in Chicago, he said, “You can either be warm, or sexy, but you can’t be both.”

That said, most of the big money folk were always sporting Canada Goose. But supporting Patagonia is also a great choice.

This is funny. Makes sense. I probably won’t be outside for a super long time in this coat. I hope not anyway! :)

if there is something you like in Patagonia and you can afford it I wouldn't hesitate

I have a Millet, it's great, you can have a look, depends ans what style you are looking for

Being warm is more important than looking stylish to me.

Yeah, I was hoping I could do both at the same time. But I see your point.

Soia & Kyo is my go-to. Canadian-level warmth, and stylish (as stylish as puffer coats can be). I don’t even zip my coat most days in NYC winters because it’s almost too-warm. They last forever too… eventually the pockets wore out a bit on my first one after 8yrs, and I bought an even warmer version. But there was so much life in it that the person I gave it to was THRILLED. Now I am a brand convert!

Second this brand - I have two, a traditional puffer and a wool dressier one. I live in western NY. I will say that I think they tend to run a bit on the smaller side.

Stole my response!

Soia & Kyo is a brand I stumbled upon at Nordstrom Rack. I bought it without knowing a thing about the brand. Paid $190 for a gorgeous down jacket with slimming, modern lines. Little did I know that it was $400 at full price. That was 7 years ago and I still get compliments on it whenever I wear it.

Btw I can only wear it on sub freezing temps, wind and no sun, otherwise it’s too hot. Literally just wear a T-shirt underneath.

Right? I came to NYC at 18 and didn’t have “proper” winter gear for years. Poor college kid, would just always be miserable outside. Finding a coat in which it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to be cold was literally life-changing…

They’re so beautiful! And expensive on their website! Good to know that they’re warm though.

sweetassassin t1_irmj9mb wrote

Remember on their website it’s in CDN. I think the dollar is stronger.

I usually get them on eBay or other resale sites! Bought a brand-new S&K Camelia coat on Poshmark for $225 (retail: $400+) this past winter. Still expensive! but the quality is better than most things you can get for that price, IMO.

I found a hooded black full-length high-fill goose down Anne Klein coat years ago that works very well. It works for snow but not rain. I wouldn’t know where to find one today, but something similar or a wool-lined Burberry trench coat could be found second-hand still.

Yes! Klein makes great heavy winter dress coats.

I was guessing camel hair wool coats would be the recommendation here but I’m admittedly out of my area of expertise!

Consider Arc’terx, they are designed by Engineers and hold up to the weather really well.

Look into pea coats for style and warmth. You’ll want one made of real wool and large enough you can add layers.

I find that peacoats are not wind resistant at all

I’ve found Fjallraven gear to be the closest mix between stylish and functional. They’re based on Sweden so they know a thing or two about cold weather gear, but it’s a little less “ski-town chic” like Patagonia and Arcteryx and more presentable in an office setting. Don’t get me wrong, those brands are both super high quality, but my Fjallraven Greenland jacket looks better without the risk of freezing.

The internet doesn't know what stylish is. https://s3.r29static.com/bin/entry/e62/x/2048675/image.png is stylish to some and ZOMFGlolWTFBBQ to others. And we don't know your budget. $10,000 coats are a thing. And we don't know your style/dress code as a Jean Paul Gaultier would work but having a hoodie featuring a live bird might not work with your job. You not wanting to be dressed for the artic does not help since 50%+ of Patagonia items ARE THAT METRIC. I recommend you go to https://www.schottnyc.com/ and see what you see as they are titans of the BIFL coat industry.

Very good point. I think I want to spend between $100 and $300 by looking at the available options. Obviously the lower the better, but if it means that I'm going to get a promotion or not, I'd go with the more expensive one :D. Those Schott coats are cute!

AsterBlomsterMonster t1_irmbh61 wrote

Maybe you just need to find a stylish wool coat, and use layering to make yourself warmer. You can always shed extra layers once you're in the office.

I got a vintage duffel coat off Etsy. Silk lining, 100% wool. It’s like 40 years old. I don’t know if whoever had it before me just didn’t wear it, but it still looks new.
