We've had the same at home for as long as I remember and we never sharpened it.. still works like it should.

You should try a sharp one. I thought my parents 12-year old peeler worked fine until I moved out and had to buy one of my own. The difference is night and day.

I don‘t know why, but for me its still relatively sharp. My roommates during university had new ones and there was no big difference. At least not that big that I thought about a replacement.
