Yep, my old crockpot failed :( disappointing because they tend to cook more evenly, but was told the newer ones cook hotter because 1) they work better and 2) it's safer. I've moved more towards the pressure cooker since both my old crockpots failed the testing kit.

It's apparently from Chicago. My grandma's side of the family is Italian, so I always assumed Italian Beef went with the other family recipes. Grandma is also from the Chicago area, so I guess this recipe is from that.

I remember it was always a 24hr+ affair. The crockpot would be on all night, and mom and dad would wake up early to cut the big hunk of beef into smaller chunks before setting it back in for the rest of the day. We'd eat it on hoagie rolls with pepperoncinis. My mouth is watering typing this haha.

It starts at high for I think 2 hours, then shifts to low. Good to have if you want to being something up to a safe temperature quicker then cooking on just low, or to just lower cooking time. I use it all the time when i make a roast like OP. 10 hours, starting with auto shift…..makes a melt in your mouth chuck roast every single time.

That's awesome then. Yeah the one that it couldn't come out just didn't work long term. Cleaning it and not being able to put it in the sink was just too tedious lol.

I did have one like that, it was made by rival. Used it one time to make chili, and it wasn’t until after i cooked and ate, i realized the crock didn’t come out. It also ran pretty hot for a vintage slow cooker, and only heated at the bottom which of course burned the entire bottom. I somehow got it clean, but never used it again. Sold it at a yard sale a few years later. I love this model tho! my grandma took good care of it, its mint inside and out. Silver lining inside still looks brand new. Ive been keeping it in the same condition tho I use it often. It just cooks perfect. No boiling

I remember reading somewhere why old crock pots cooked better and it was something about the heating elements in ones like this is different in modern crock pots. I think it was related to the heat output being less on the old ones because new regulations made modern crockpots cook hotter.

Yup. i think it happened in the mid or late 80s after models like this were made. FDA stated older slow cookers may potentially keep food in the danger zone too long(i think the real concern was people reheating a meal in a older one, i dont) and changed regulations to make them run hotter. I hate the newer ones. My parents went thru 3 of them in a couple of years after they threw away one similar to this, because new is better right? Every one they tried boiled even on low. Makes for a tough roast. Now they just don’t slow cook anymore. For that reason I wont be letting this gem go!

Ooooh we have an enameled cast iron oval dutch oven and I LOVE that thing. It was only $25 at Aldi's and looks exactly like a le cruset 5qt oval copycat. We have a long 5th burner on the stove top too so we use it on the stove top or in the oven. Also take it camping and use it on the propane stove top too. Best $25 I ever spent.

Those old ones are better! Many of the new ones boil even on the low setting. You want around 185 degrees, just shy of a boil. My 1972 model still works, has removable crock, cost me $22, a princely sum back then.

Mine's not that old school, but it was a wedding shower gift - we got married in 1989, and my coworkers are amazed every time I bring it to potluck! It's a little smaller than the one you have, but perfect for potlucks. 😉
