Highest quality and most durable garbage can on the market?

Honestly I feel like I’ve been dealing with this issue for over a decade. I had a nice Kohler pedal trashcan I spent a pretty penny on, and the opening mechanism broke within two years of regular use. More recently I bought a Brabantia, and it literally broke and got dented within the week when my dog knocked it over. They were nice enough to send me a for replacement, but it was clear how flimsy it is - the open/close mechanism broke today, and it’s less than two years old.

What options do I have if I want something that works perfectly for years and I’m willing to put down a nice chunk of change?

I have a simple black plastic Rubbermaid that we've been using for at least 7 years. Not fancy but durable and inexpensive!

I’ve had a $20 black rubbermaid for 4 years and when the lid wouldn’t stay closed because of the button because I’d used it for so long they sent me a new lid for free.

yes it has a pedal and a lock button you can slide closed on the lid. Not sure of model or name but it's oval black plastic , holds 13 gallon bags. Wal mart or home depot. $20 ish

Simplehuman is a popular premium offering. I got my like-new matte black one online and really like it, but I don’t know if I’d pay MSRP for it.

Simplehuman is cheaper than the ones I’ve bought but seems pretty flimsy to me, unless they’ve changed recently. I bought one for my parents and the one in their bathroom is fine but their kitchen one is showing wear.

When did you buys yours?

I have had some for a long time. The lid on one stopped working and they sent me an entirely new one since it was still under warranty. This was a few years ago.

I don't think they would qualify as BIFL but they are decent for the price.

This seems like a good idea. I remember when I was having issues with brooms and dustpans I ended up switching to rubbermaid commercial and have been happy with them.

Do you have pets? Is it easy for them to open the can?

We got the taller version of this and love it. Our large dog has not gotten into it. Our size is larger than regular kitchen bags, though.

I have two corgis and an Aussie and they don’t bother it at all. But our kitchen trash can is built into a cabinet and this one isn’t full of yummy food scraps.

I swapped to the kind that pull out from a cabinet. Rev-a-shelf makes them. Dog proof and just takes a simple open plastic bin.

Even my crafty ass dogs can’t open cabinets? But they can knock over literally any trash can.

Probably some steel can used in industrial setting with no moving parts. I personally have a simple human for my house that’s going strong now 4 years later. If it ever breaks I think I got my monies worth.

Rubbermaid commercial, we have the slimjim ones at my work and a big one, they all go through a lot of beating and still hold up. Pretty sure it’s because they use flexible plastic, absorbs impact maybe? They make good dust pans too.
