The only downside of this jacket is the pocket situation. It has one center pouch pocket under the zipper, and it has one left hand pocket both Velcro and zip. It’s a little bit weird, but from an ergonomic standpoint for rowing it actually makes sense.

Are you talking about the boathouse that sells skater/surfer clothing? I didn’t think they made anything with more quality than generic brands.
ripgoodhomer OP t1_jbqzm2u wrote
I’m assuming since my jacket is in great condition after pretty regular use that it is a different brand.

Is it still waterproof or does it bleed through? Did you have to retreat it with DWR?
xvtzero t1_jbr6e39 wrote
You’re correct. I’m in Canada. My Boathouse is not the elite performance outerwear that is your brand in the states lol. Very confusing for 2 companies to have the exact same name
ripgoodhomer OP t1_jbr9dx6 wrote
If it is pouring there is some bleed through, but throwing it in a tumble dry seems to recharge the goretex
ripgoodhomer OP t1_jbr9ki1 wrote
Yes, generally the specific colors are for crew teams custom orders.

I got mine rowing for Purdue in 2003. It was a big deal then, and I remember it being expensive. I still wear it, not all the time, but it’s still waterproof.
ripgoodhomer OP t1_jbrhimm wrote
Right on, what was your team’s policy? Mine was three seasons and you could order one.

At the end of the first season iirc.

I got mine rowing as well. I like the extra flap you could pull down if needed.

How come? Arcyterx state to:
> place the garment in a tumble drier on a medium heat setting (40°C / 104°F) for 40 to 50 minutes.
Is that a bad plan?
Superbikeboy t1_jbs3wy2 wrote
Most companies suggest drying anything with a dwr coating (this includes many gortex garments, even membrane jackets require a dwr layer to prevent the jacket wetting through). Drying with heat renews this coating, washing also helps clear dirt from the dwr layer which increases waterproofness/breathability.
Whatadamnview t1_jbs41c3 wrote
This is a common myth.
Whatadamnview t1_jbs449j wrote
Low to medium heat until dry. Most technical pieces are pretty quick to dry, so it may only take 20-30 minutes.
PeaceOfGold t1_jbs6ejk wrote
Got one from my high school and one from my Master's team! One stays in my camp kit as my go to waterproof layer. Being able to tuck the tail under me has been great on and off the water. The hood rolls into the collar on mine too.

I like it but hate how it’s like 4 inches longer on the back. It’s not like that in the first pic though, does it tie up or something?

Ya, it costs over $300 currently. It is nice, but that’s a lot of money. But I guess you get what you pay for.

bigkinggorilla t1_jbt6nna wrote
Seeing that other people are talking about it being for rowing, I’m guessing that’s to keep your low back covered all the time. If it was the normal length it would ride up every time you reach forward.
You don’t want it to be longer in front for… actually I don’t know why. Style? But the back part makes functional sense.

Wouldn't the center pocket be impossible to get into under a life jacket?
ripgoodhomer OP t1_jbtq4oc wrote
You typically don’t wear a life jacket while rowing. I rarely ever accessed my pocket on the water, but the reason it’s a pouch is the oar will get caught and rip the sleeve style pocket on a hoodie.
RBDG t1_jbtwe4i wrote
Aside from being pullover and the pocket configuration is this basically the same jacket as the Blitz?
ripgoodhomer OP t1_jbtwu5y wrote
It appears to be very similar, the blitz doesn’t have the flap in the back. The blitz seems to be more of an everyday jacket, while the Stevenson seems a little more specialized for rowers.

At least for mine, it'll stay waterproof for a while in the rain, but if you're out in it for a long time it will soak through eventually. Had a practice in heavy rain for a couple hours where I was the cox for the boat and had my phone in the kangaroo pouch for drills, and ended up having to get a new phone after. For anything less than that though they're great

“We’re too poor to buy cheap things.”
EDIT: Perhaps I should’ve given some context. The quote is from one of Rajiv Surendra’s videos, and is the sentiment I grew up with. We didn’t have much money, but when we bought things, we bought the absolute best quality we could because we needed it to last. That’s the whole point of BIFL, and I feel like it’s especially important for people who don’t have much money, because buying something good once is often cheaper (and a lot more satisfying) than replacing it every couple of years. My grandmothers sewing machine cost them a month’s wages like 60 years ago, but soon I’ll be getting it (from my aunt, who it was passed down to). A family friend of ours has a couch that is over 50 years old. It’s been recovered a few times to match the fashion trends, but it’s still in excellent condition, looks amazing, and will be passed down to their kids.
$300 is a lot for a waterproof jacket, but if it’s really good, lasts a long time, and you spend a lot of time outside in the rain, then it might be worth it.
ripgoodhomer OP t1_jbvim86 wrote
We’ve seen arcterx and Patagonia jackets, but I’ve yet to see a boathouse jacket. I’m not saying it’s better than any others but it has at least 15 years under its belt, is in good condition and you can still buy one.
