Its common for wool shirts to be blended with around 15% nylon. I think its for durability and cost. The more expensive brands (Pendleton ,etc) are 100% wool and are still preferable IMO.

I think it's probably for stretch and to prevent felting (fulling). You will find this most notably in socks. 100% wool doesn't actually stretch and will felt (aka full) very easily. Adding a bit of nylon gives it that spring without having to do some strange weave to the fabric.

Exactly this. 100% wool doesn't hold up as well. I think the current widely used approach is a synthetic core with wool spun around it
