I tried a pair of these and they had a bizarre fit - the toe box was shifted way out of line with the back of the shoe. I tried them because I was looking for a wide toe box but they were crushing my toes due to the offset.

Walking shoes should never be BIFL. They’re a wear item. After a certain number of miles the cushion breaks down and no longer does its job. Also the soles, and construction in general, need to be light weight so it wears out quickly.

Just get a good pair and consider them disposable.

+1

They aren’t BIFL but hiking/walking shoes aren’t really supposed to be.

When this pair falls apart they’ll get demoted to yard work shoes and then I’ll buy a new pair for hiking

I love my New Balance Fresh Foam shoes, they come in wide widths and lace tightly. I think they were $150 with tax at a performance shoe store. I’ve had plantar fasciitis and heel pain issues, and they are pretty much gone now with so much comfortable support. I now can walk up to 19k steps in a day without pain afterwards! They also look nice and not too bulky, my 2nd choice was a pair of Brooks, similarly priced but kind of bulky looking.

What version of Fresh Foam do you have (number and name)? I bought Fresh Foam Arishis and I don’t like them as much as FF Boracays.

Not sure of name, but there’s “880” printed next to “Fresh Foam” on the tongue and rear heel design.

I'm interested too. I walk through the soles ridiculously fast ☹️

I can't 100% say bifl, but I recently bought the Vivobarefoot trekking shoes. They are light, wide on the toe and make your walking style in a fashion that won't wear as quickly. I walk more than you, both on a treadmill and on sand, concrete, grass or just "other", and they still (two months in) don't show any tear (after ~1,000km).

Vivobarefoot has phenomenal shoes. I've been using Primus Lites for the last few years for my everyday wear. Got a couple others for different purposes.

OP, choose whatever you think is best from there.

I didn't remember my model; went to their website. Mine is the Primus Trail Knit FG. I really love them. The Lites seemed too much barefoot when I tried them on.

Adidas Terrex Free hikers? I have an older pair, I use them for city walking when I’m being a tourist and doing long days, or hiking soft/muddy trails.

Xero Shoes meets all of your criteria, but is not BIFL. They make great barefoot shoes for wide feet, but the soles eventually wear out.

Super out there recommendation but I wear hiking boots as my everyday shoes and I love them, you should probably go to hiking shoes since you want a thin ankle area but they have great support, especially walking long distances over different terrains

Go to a running store and get your gait analysis.

New Balance 880s/860s are really great and mostly on discount in Joe's balance outlet.

A few lifers in the retail game told me the best thing was to go to a podiatrist, and get custom inserts. Then wear whatever the fuck you want with them

Check out the brand "No Bull". They have the "sock-type" shoe.

I second going to a local running store to get fit properly. Most good shoe brands come in wide width. I use Ascis in wide width and they are very comfortable. Each pair will last about a year. I'd also recommend in investing in good socks.
