I know there are a lot of threads already, but my case is a bit particular. I broke both ankles a few years ago and since then I pretty much only use boots. I have a lot of boots of all kinds since it is pretty much the only kind of shoe I can use and feel 'safe' since my ankles never really fully healed. I had been checking for a pair of boots that are very very comfortable to use every day, from doing shopping, walking the dog, and office work. I have tested a few of the ones mentioned here like dr martens and red, but they feel to 'made for work' and not particularly comfortable. I read that they get better over time, but just won't want to spend a lot of money in a pair that probably won't be comfortable.

Basically my question is, what is the best pair of boots in term of durability and comfort I can get? particularly not for hiking or working.

Thanks!

Based on the comments, here are some EDC boot recommendations:

  • Altberg boots: highly rated by police and fire services, official boot of the British army, and offers a variety of fits and styles.
  • Danner Acadias: recommended by some users for their durability and range of styles.
  • Redback boots: recommended by multiple users for their toughness and comfort.
  • Keen boots: recommended by some users for their versatility and durability.
  • LL Bean Cresta boots: recommended by some users for their Gore-Tex lining and solid leather upper.
  • Carolina boots: recommended by some users for their water resistance and aggressive tread.
  • Meindl Combat Extreme boots: recommended by a user for their comfort and durability.
  • Whites, Nicks, JK, and Franks boots: recommended by some users for their durability and made-to-order options.

You cannot ask about comfort online. Ever. Its like asking for your next album purchase, movie to see or person to date....these are personal matters and you make go buy my recommendation and the boots will hurt like hell and/or you are a knucklehead and buy a size 12W when you are a Brannock 13AA.

Durability comes from goodyear welt construction. Ask/look for those words as many "great boots" makers have both goodyear welt boots and disposable boots, so if you don't see the words, keep looking. Examples of who sell both are Red Wing and Timberland.

If you need ankle support, you want THICK leather and a high shaft (8” or more). Bootmakers like Nicks, Whites, Drew’s, JK, and Franks all fit the bill. Their leathers are so thick that boot making machines can’t work the leather, and are therefore made by hand.

I own multiple pairs from the makers above due to crappy ankles and the need for serious arch support. No other boots come close, and I’ve work a lot of different boots before finding these guys. They suck to break in, but they’re super durable, incredibly supportive, and almost infinitely repairable.

Among them, Nicks is probably my overall favorite, but you can’t go wrong with any of them.

German army para boots. I guarantee they will be the most comfortable place you have ever put your feet. Edit, they also last for years.

I'm fond of Bellevue boots. They and Altima are the two official suppliers to the US military.

I have used a bunch of military boots and by far the most comfortable was Rocky S2V. As a civilian I have been using keen utility for comfort. Can’t go wrong with either. Don’t see rocky boots recommended here but probably because people here aren’t familiar with the brand.
