I'm just curious what your best BIFL Products is that you need to replace parts for, but if you treat it well will last forever.

For example, a good shopvac, because you need to keep the filter changed/ clean. A great cooler is a bad example, as it will always just work.

Also, what's your most surprising piece of advice to turn a non BIFL into one that is? Eg, [blank] will actually last forever if you just [blank].

1990s Honda Civic hatchback. They run forever. Just keep replacing the parts and give them regular maintenance.

That’s my example for a non bifl item turning bifl.

Welted leather boots.

Several brands, old school docs and redwings immediately come to mind.

But as long as you have the boot they can repair it.

But then again, that starts a ship of Theseus argument

There's a lot discussed here imo:

Many of these have easily replaceable parts and components.

But my answer outside of that thread would be Victorionox knives. The components that are sturdy won't break. But you can replace just about everything here - and the stuff that isn't listed won't break:

The one for me is Shopvacs:

  1. You can and should buy the "vacuum cleaner bags" for them. They work just like the ones in your sweeper in the house and contain 99% of the dirt in them, so the interior drum and interior K&N looking filter stay Day One brand new forever.
  2. People call the wet/dry vacuums and use them as such. By people, I mean morons. These should be a single function device. Dry or Wet. Heck, buy two and label them Dry and Wet. Unless you are a Cleaning Nazi pre and post wet use, clean and dry the drum, interior K&N filter assembly and internals, it will develop SuperAIDS and smell like a dumpster fire at a Thai restaurant. I have a shop vac. Every human authorized to operate it knows it is never to be used for wet pickup or I will climb to the top rope and give them the People's Elbow. They also know to check the bag, where the extra bags are and not use it if they can't figure out how to change it.

Seems silly, but it smells like wine and roses on the inside and the interior is lickably clean. And I'm sure these actions will increase the lifespan by 50% or more vs. Suckitup Johnny.

Not a big craftsman person anymore. But I’ve had it for ten years and have only had to switch out the bottom drainage hole. Have had it for ten years, at least.

Oh. And my 05 Tacoma. 240,000 miles daily driver. I’ve fixed most of the little things myself. No check engine light on anymore.

Mechanical Nikon & Leica cameras will keep on working with routine service and will keep going as long as film is kept alive. Sachtler & Gitzo tripods last forever and rarely need service. Filson bags can be repaired by the manufacturer in Seattle. Rolex & Omega watches (most mechanical watches tbh) can last lifetimes with routine servicing.

Guns. If you actually shopt them, you'll need to replace wear parts.

Bicycles. Drivetrain parts wear out. A well-built frame will last forever.

My 1984 2WD Toyota Truck. With routine maintenance it'll easily outlast my 2015 Prius and 2022 Tacoma. There just isn't anything to go wrong on it - manual transmission, no power steering, no AC, carbureted, no electronics of any kind. It'll outlive the Sun.
