I’ve got a handful of SmartWool socks that have been in my daily rotation every week for the past 4 years, worn for a job where I am on my feet and active for at least 8-9 hours per day. Number of holes in any of those pairs? Zero. Definitely recommend buying them from REI/Backcountry/Moosejaw/etc clearance sections!

Not SmartWool (I don't think?), but I'm literally wearing my REI wool socks right now to keep the morning cold away, and they are so soft and warm. Nothing beats a pair of wool socks, long johns, and an oversized, open, button down dress shirt after having to get out from bed to cook breakfast. I am comfy supreme!!

john_the_fetch t1_iu4faf9 wrote

I agree on the smart wool. I have a set of 6 pairs that I love and they are holding uo well. I haven't had them long but that's the plan.

I think that timespan is unrealistic for socks on a weekly (approximately) rotation. The elastic will be shot unless you air dry and maybe even then sooner.

EelgrassKelp t1_iu2xabr wrote

My darn tough last that long, or longer, but I don't wear them much in the summer.

I live in a fairly hot climate, and their lighter socks are fine for me in the summer.

Have you tried Bombas?

KoiCyclist t1_iu443p3 wrote

Definitely have holes in my >2 year old bombas. Didn’t even wear them that often. Kid’s bombas were even worse.

DeadheadDatura t1_iu47fli wrote

Holes in our son’s as well. We bought 12 pairs last spring and at least 5 of the pairs have holes (in the sole) significant enough to throw them away. Could have the same result buying a 6 pack of Hanes… and save $40.

KittyLikesTuna t1_iu478qd wrote

I got my Bombas years and years ago and just started darning the little holes that are beginning to show up. Still going very strong, especially if you catch the thinning spots early.

whatfuckingever69 t1_iu4qbdq wrote

What do you mean by this? I have quite wide feet and have been wearing Darn Toughs daily for years

5

Bigdaddygucci t1_iu4qswr wrote

Which models? I’ve tried 5 different models they have and they are all too narrow… maybe my wide feet is wider than ur wide feet 😞

teigrgwyn t1_iu5l419 wrote

I am size 8 extra wide, and their thickest boot socks are good for me

2

Bigdaddygucci t1_iu5lpek wrote

Their thicker wool socks have been ok for me. Not for all day, but maybe a 2-4 hour hike. Their low cut ones(no show and ankle) I literally can’t. I sized up and then another size up and it’s just too long where it’ll move around in the shoes. Ima size 9 in most shoes but have to get 9.5 or 10 cuz width. If they have extra wide I get 9 extra wide

LostmyHistoryKey t1_iu6i410 wrote

Try Balega socks

1

Bigdaddygucci t1_iu7w9pf wrote

They bifl and good for wide feet?

2

LostmyHistoryKey t1_iuc4tlm wrote

Yes. They have a one year warranty though, Darn Tough is lifetime. Darn Tough has a lot of fashion style socks, Balega is more performance.

LostmyHistoryKey t1_iuev74g wrote

I bought them for my mom, she wears a 9 wide and she absolutely loves them. She’s addicted to them now, in the summer she wears the No-show version and in winter she’s wearing the crew socks.

The Darn Tough, she loved the cute designs but hated how they fit on her wide foot. They were really really tight.

I had bought them for her because she walks a lot and kept complaining about the ball of her foot hurting. After trying many different shoes and socks, her foot problems have gone away. She’s even able to walk around the house in just socks now.

Her perfect combo is Hoka Bondi (wide width) or Saucony Triumph with Balega socks. Prior to my “intervention” she was wearing sketchers with regular cheap socks

I bought an 8 pack of puma socks from Costco that I wear exclusively for five years now. I wear them to work and on the weekends. I don't wear hiking or when I need taller socks but that is rare.

I'm about to buy a second pack only because of if I want to wait two weeks to do laundry I have to wear other socks and my other socks are not comfortable in comparison.

During most of that time I'm walking for fitness at lunch for a couple of miles or going to the gym but have an office job.

I have Bombas that I bought over 5 years ago but I can tell you that you cannot have just 7 pairs of those, wear them exclusively and expect them to last more than a year.

4

_never_nood t1_iu3rr1z wrote

I like the pumas, too. They fit well and have lasted a few years and aren't wearing out so far. Did not like how the Bombas felt, or how much they cost.

3

Imightbeworking t1_iu4tjqa wrote

I have had Puma socks last me much longer than Hanes or Adidas. I know this is buy it for life, but socks are just an item that need to be rebought every few years.

ericj5150 t1_iu5un73 wrote

Puma socks from Costco are great when new. They are cotton and very comfortable when new. After a year they are no longer soft and ready to retire. My Merino wool socks, both Smart wool and Darn Tough are great and last. Cotton Pumas and Merino Wool socks are different animals. You can not compare the two.

Vans no show socks. Made for skateboarding so super durable. Little ankle grip and mines lasted me for years.

1

acoffeequeen t1_iu3pn19 wrote

I second these for no show socks! They are more durable and actually stay.

I buy the ASICS cushion socks. They look similar to the Bombas but I’ve never had them. The elastic does wear out but I’ve had mine for 7 years now.

couldbeyouornot t1_iu3i2ow wrote

I have these no-shows and they're the only ones i've ever owned that I don't actively hate. the silicone no-slip thing is a winner. they're thinner than your average athletic sock, but they make tons of other varieties. I haven't had any issues with them stretching out or getting holes but I don't walk around barefoot in them. they've held up great. I don't go through that many socks tbh, but I went on a quest for better ones and ended up with these. ankle socks--I don't wear them, sorry. mine are all short or tall wool ones. otherwise i'm barefoot or sock-less.

banditwandit t1_iu3jyv4 wrote

Platypus. Hands down the best ankle socks ever. Not sure if they're sold outside Australia though.

Idk. But what I do know is what I am using. I wear a lot of Y-3, Yeezy sneakers and I use the Darn Tough Topless Solid No Show Hidden Light Mens Socks and they been going for two years now and are really good. I am planning to buy more black friday. Remember to wash them with wool care. I use wool care from Miele.

MonsterByDay t1_iu3wygw wrote

I wear darn tough ankle socks, and they last a predictably long time.

But they’re socks, so they will wear out eventually.

Since I want DT to stay in business, to keep making high quality socks, and to continue to warranty against actual defects, when they wear out I buy new ones.

But I’m a big dude, and I get 5ish years out of them.

1

hoveringpurpleblob t1_iu40gup wrote

I wear through socks pretty quickly. My approach is buy a comfortable cheaper option and know I'll go through them eventually.

1

graywoman7 t1_iu419ae wrote

You’re looking to get a minimum of 182 wears out of each pair of socks which I don’t think is realistic. A larger quantity would reduce the number of wears per pair in five years or you’ll need to reduce the amount of time you expect the batch of sock to last you.

quietbatpeople22 t1_iu56614 wrote

Lululemon socks have been great for me. I have 6 or 7 pairs, and the first pair I bought in 2014 only just got a hole in them. Not the warmest in the world, but if that's not a concern, they're good quality.

Cloud line

1

dnalloHnosaM t1_iu61rne wrote

Second cloudline socks - their warranty is truly hassle free and they have various styles for various activities and looks. Darn tough warranty was a bit of a pain and the sales weren't as frequent as cloudline. Point 6 is another brand, however they fit a bit tight for my liking. Best of luck with the search!

Under armour resistor 3.0 no show socks. They have been the longest lasting, mostly white, no show socks I've ever owned. I think i had them 5 years, maybe longer, and I'm just now getting ones with holes and had to order a new batch

oscarito2019 t1_iu6gm37 wrote

Another vote for smartwool - I've had the no-show socks for well over 5 years and have just started getting holes in some of them.
