This. Get a Brother laser printer. They're cheap and reliable. They take cheap, 3rd party toner cartridges, too.
Yes, and buy a used one from somewhere that recycles old business IT kit. (Assuming you are happy with mono) it will cost you less than a cheap inkjet and last forever.
I second this and on some.of.the older models you can reset the printer to use more of your cartridges
Do not buy an HP. They are well known to intentionally cripple their products to disable functionality, require an account, and lock out third party components. Definitely not BIFL. Stivk with a Brother laser printer.
I’ve got an old compact HP LaserJet — it’s probably the reason modern HP printers are so crippled. It’s my second one, bought in 2006 when they stopped making the toner cartridges from my original from the 90s. I expect this one to last me until they change the cartridge again… then I’ll probably not buy a replacement but just print anything through a local print shop.
Exactly, the old stuff is great. But at some point in the 2010s their greed took over and they only make disposable garbage now. Even their enterprise level stuff is awful.
That’s the exact reason why we just bought a Brother printer. Considering how often we use it, it made the most sense and we’re not tied to some cash grab subscription program.
Buy a laser printer for sure, but before you do shop online for replacement toner cartridges, because they likely cost more than the printer itself. Buy a printer for which you can buy cheap toner. Even if you don't print much (like me) it's still more expensive than the machine itself.
I've had a black and white Brothers for longer than I can remember, maybe 10 years. Toner was cheap, still is. It still works, duplex, wireless, no problem. Very happy with it, obviously.

Ink dries out, toner doesn’t. We went through three inkjet printers (sporadic, long time between prints) and the heads clogged and weren’t easily fixable. We bought a Brother color laser, and it is fantastic. Had it for a year, still using original toner that came with it. Wireless printing from anywhere my network reaches.
I had HP Instant Ink and I don’t recommend the program. They limit how much you can print per month and the cartridges only work if you have an active subscription. It felt scammy and wasteful. IIRC the cancellation process was harder than necessary
Your question lacks depth. Maybe you print photos. Maybe you print spreadsheets. Maybe you print colors. That determines the printer. And in terms of BIFL, nothing beats an laser. You can whine about the cost to the wind as you either own a BIFL printer or you don't. My laser's toner is likely expensive dunno...its been spitting out pages at the rate of artillery shell use at the Battle of Argonne Forest and there is no end in sight. And it doesn't dry out. And it doesn't mock me when cyan is low as its a black and white printer. I keep my color one over at Walgreens and let them handle my color and photo needs. If you want BIFL, you will get a laser and suck it up. And you'll be using it for 20 years.
I hate HP printers with a passion. I have never had one that lasted and functioned properly. I have slowly phased out my HP printers at my company and my home to Brother printers and haven't had the first issue.
Laser printer a few years ago was one of the best purchases of my life. Ink never dries out and pages print in a couple seconds.
Toner is expensive up front, but especially if you print infrequently, it will significantly reduce your cost per page compared to ink. I like HPs quite a bit, I've owned them personally, and have administrated them in office environments
Get a laser printer. Some shops sell used but tested and functioning business grade printer.
I got a Samsung laser printer about 6 years ago and it works great.
I'm about to throw and really throw my HP printer out. Horrible, first there were the ink issues and HP locking my printer in my home from doing anything cause their system said I didn't pay while I did. Now I have paper jams almost every time. 4 pages max with fingers crossed. I just know I'll hear it again that "bleep-bleep.... bleep-bleep". But I'm beginning to understand this printer I think. I hear it now, it says "fuck-you .... fuck-you".
My kids saw that someone dumped a printer on the street and mentioned it. I said: "Is it an HP?" It was. I said "I get that, I completely get that. Let's not judge people."
Buy a laser printer and don't look back. I bought a HP 3600N over 10 years ago and has saved me about a bazillion dollars over an inkjet. Toner is cheap and I only replace about once every year. My wife is a teacher and we printer stuff ALL the time. I'd be homeless if we were using an inkjet.
Just as everyone says: brother laser - avoid HP at all costs!
Get a laser printer. Ink jets fail at a high rate and the ink is really expensive
Brother laser, with 3rd party refills or fill them yourself
Don't. Buy. HP.
Brother all the way. And laser, as everyone else says.

Bought my first laser printer in 2005. You should get a laser printer - ink refills are a giant scam.
