Maybe you got a dud unit with the Breville? I've had that same wide-slice Breville for more than 7 years, use it all the time, never had any issues with toasting, nobs, etc. Might be worth getting another unit to see if it's any better.

You may be right. All reviews were good when I bought it. That being said, it was damn near a hundred bucks and I'm a little gun shy on pulling the trigger on another one.

You should email them with the serial number and your receipt. I haven’t had an issue with breville products specifically but most companies I’ve dealt with of that tier are more than happy to hear your complaints and often will send a replacement.
