Even at Lodge, their egg is stuck to the skillet.

You did not season enough. Though shalt be brought before the cast iron throne.

Didn't anybody ever tell you that Lodge Cast Iron is perfectly seasoned straight from the factory?!? They use their special proprietary techniques that will make an egg slide straight off of the surface, even if that surface is rougher than 40 grit sandpaper!

Yeah but just keep cooking in it and it’ll work out.

I had to zoom in and read the “Please keep off the skillet” sign which 1) is an incredibly hilarious phrase and 2) I still can’t wrap my head around how big this actually is lol [Edit] Found this photo for reference

The world's largest cast iron skillet measures 18 feet across and weighs 14,360 pounds. Created by Lodge Cast Iron, a 126-year-old American cookware company, the “history-making” cast iron skillet can be viewed in person at the new Lodge Museum of Cast Iron, located in South Pittsburg, Tennessee.

For true Americans who reject colonial British units, that's 0.06 football fields and 30,952 Big Macs. For the rest of us, that's 5.5 meters and 6.5 metric tons.

18 feet including the handles, looks like a 12' pan size by my reckoning.

The sign behind looks like it could say 12 ft diameter

They also have a cast iron cornbread cooking competition in South Pittsburg sponsored by lodge

I did see that, and on that weekend you can tour the foundry

I wonder how long before they make a post here asking if they have ruined it.

One of our visitors spilled water on it and created a discoloration. Can it be salvaged?

OpinelNo8 t1_ixvkczj wrote

Nope, sorry. The rusty remains will have to be returned to the furnace to be reforged.

I own a Lodge cast iron Skillet pan and it was the best thing I ever bought for my kitchen 100%

Non-stick coatings (Teflon & similar) are toxic

Only use cast iron or stainless steel for safe non toxic cooking

Iannelli t1_ixw0ubt wrote

Nah, stop spreading misinformation. Lesson #1 of toxicology is that "the dose makes the poison."

Use a Teflon-coated pan properly and it's completely fine. That means use plastic utensils, don't scratch the surface, and don't expose the pan to extremely high heat, especially without any food on it.

Don't fear monger. Teflon-coated pans have their place in every kitchen.

PeriqueFreak t1_ixx6v6o wrote

One thing I've been hearing about is microplastics in Teflon, and that even a small scratch in the surface can be an issue.

But, I'm not a paranoid health-nut, so I use them for stuff anyway.

Nathgen t1_ixy4lo2 wrote

One tiny scratch in Teflon can release thousands of toxic particles into your food which you then eat

Is it worth the risk? No

Shlushii t1_ixvgalf wrote

Probobally cheaper than some carbon steel pans still

I have one and I use it almost everyday. I love it to death. Wrong since it will never die and it will be passed down for generations.

I mean it requires a giant sand mold and probably a literal ton of steel. Then the giant oven to season it or it'll rust.

3

iaalaughlin t1_ixwai1d wrote

Little over 7 tons of cast iron; it weighs over 14,360 pounds.

No steel though.
