Denture tablets are the way.

Thermos funk tends to be from volatile oils and a layer of casein from dairy. The dairy layers up, provides a home for oils which get rancid and gross. Denture tabs were literally designed to combat biofilms exactly like these.

I do one tablet in the mug and one in a cup with the lid gaskets, soak a few hours and a quick hit with a bottle brush. Keeps the mouthpiece sparkling, hasn't damaged any of the gaskets.

Are denture tablets better than those citric cleaners you can dunk these in? I've seen them used for cleaning build up on rice cookers.

Denture tablets are specifically made to break up biofilms. I don't know if they're better as I've not used citric acid for that purpose, but I'd imagine so.
