Suggestions for a jacket for someone who lives southeast asia

So I am from Singapore but currently living in Toronto till 20 December. I am thinking of getting a jacket for my time here but also since my cold wear is pretty rekt.

I have narrowed it down to these choices:

i had 3 choices:

  1. Arcteryx Atom LT. Should be pretty versatile and I wonder if can use as office jacket in Singapore so it won’t be sitting in the closet.

  2. The North Face Nuptse Jacket - not sure if this is BIFL though

  3. Patagonia down jackets - ironclad guarantee is pretty attractive as i won’t need to be afraid about it getting rekt

  4. just sticking to my 3 year old uniqlo ultra light down since although it is leaking feathers pretty badly, i have a month left. con is that next time if i ever go on a winter holiday i need to buy jacket in singapore

Any advice will be appreciated!!

If you’re only there for another month, just keep using the Uniqlo. I don’t see the point in dropping Patagonia money for such a short time.

I think any jacket that is sufficient for a Toronto winter is going to be too hot for anything in Singapore apart from the frigid early morning MRT and buses😂.

You can get cheaper Carhartt jackets that will easily handle Toronto December weather and will not wear out if you only use it as a travel jacket to colder climates. I agree with the poster above, Patagonia and north face are pricy and imo they rip a lot easier...you'll never see one on a job site for example.

I live in canada and get around on a bike all year long, here's the state of my winter wardrobe after some years dialing it in:

  • One simple, single-layer jacket.
  • One cotton hoodie.
  • One packable down jacket that I keep in my bag in case I get stuck in the cold for whatever reason, but in three or so years I've only used it when I was sitting for hours in the cold, never when I was actually moving/riding/working outside.
  • One fleece jacket.
  • One impermeable but uninsulated jacket that's big enough to fit over everything else. Don't really need this one in winter because it's too cold for rain.

I don't actually own a dedicated "winter coat", I just layer the above according to conditions, along with a scarf, wool hat and either mittens or thinner gloves.

Patagucci all the way, out of the three they are the best inre: standing behind the quality of their products and guaranteeing it for life (under normal wear circumstances)

it's pricey (thus the addition of gucci) but worth it in my opinion. Won't be tough to resell should you so choose to do in the future
