I still have mine, I'm not mentally prepared for when it dies. I have zero issues with it since I bought it, despite thousands of hours of gaming.

You'll be devastated when you learn that current Logitech mice have a design flaw that results in double clicks.

PeriqueFreak t1_ixn3fn1 wrote

My Zowie FK2 does that sometimes too, but only with the middle button. It's weird though, it'll happen a bunch for like a week, then it just goes away.

LunDeus t1_ixnspx9 wrote

It's not just Logitech. Cheap switches from China have infected numerous steelseries as well.

4

BeforeLifer t1_ixni8x0 wrote

My previous mouse started to do that after I dropped it one to many times, got a couple years out of it at least.

2

HalanLore t1_ixno1kq wrote

Mine (which came with my computer so no complaints lol) failed to distinguish between left clicks, right clicks, and the middle scroll button

Frenky_Fisher t1_ixma0r6 wrote

you should know that Logitech revived the series, you can still find them under the name "G MX518"

I was in the same place as you, first time this mouse started dying i managed to keep it alive for couple more years by changing cables and shit.

12

Willowisp_ t1_ixmhf59 wrote

Do you know if the new series is as durable as the old version? I heard they changed the place where the mouse is produced

3

Frenky_Fisher t1_ixq8qdz wrote

Pretty sure it isnt, but thats the case for almost anything made today.

I cant rly give you an answer since i bought it only 2 years ago.

For now it seems fine, looks the same as new, no scratches or worn down rubber. Tho the cable is kinda thin and not braided so im pretty sure that will be the point of failure (tho i dont mind, i have done it on the original one a couple of times)

My mouse hand was moulded by MX518's shape so getting a new one with the same shape felt great

2

zewill87 t1_ixnhw1b wrote

They revived it with shitty materials probably to save a few $ here and there. I don't think it'll last this time around.

2

Frenky_Fisher t1_ixq8uhr wrote

This kinda is the case for everyting that comes out. Old producs outlast the new one all the times, unfortunately

hawkfrag OP t1_ixk0hyg wrote

I think when this one dies I’ll take it apart and mount the pieces in a shadow box.

Got mine in 2006-2007 and it lasted valiantly until 2020...replaced with the G502 Hero which is still pretty awesome.

sol209 t1_iyds6tb wrote

Went through two of these playing cs 1.6 and cs:cz, first thing that fails are the usb wires in front of the mouse. I had the melltalic orange rust color scheme.

31

akurgo t1_ixn2oer wrote

I repaired my MX500 by gluing a tiny length of paperclip beneath the worn-out left click button. It last for a couple more years before I bought a MX518.

Had an mx510, rad look. Good performance. Didn't hold a candle to Intellimouse Explorer 3.

1

External_Swimming_89 t1_ixnw0rz wrote

I loved the intellimouse too, I still was a bigger fan of the MX510. I think it's got to do with the shape of my hand. The side of my hand would always scratch against the bottom right side on the intellimouse. Also the scroll died on me but I had the intellimouse for long enough to rubb off the metallic paint on the mouse one 😂 in the end the scroll died and the mouse1 wouldn't click reliably anymore so I got the MX510 since at the time they didn't sell the IE anymore :( damn.. those were the days. This really brought me back memory lane.

Did you ever use the frosted plexi glass mousemat called IceMat? It was pure terror on the ears if you didn't wipe it for dust on a daily basis but once you got some skatez under the mouse it was the shit.. Shame they never mad any of them big enough so you'd constantly bang Ur mouse on the edges.

1

Strong-Fudge1342 t1_ixppgo9 wrote

I thankfully did not buy into the IceMat gimmick :P Not that I had any money at the time

Using a steelseries 300 rival mouse today, it's very IE 3.0

External_Swimming_89 t1_ixpymqr wrote

The surface texture? That's how they looked brand new. It's just a 2d texture made to look wavy.

pr0jecktpat t1_ixjl8vo wrote

I still have mine, but it isn't working right anymore. It started becoming very spotty about two months ago tracking wise. The buttons still work fine. I think I can fix it though. More than likely it is because of the pull on the cable going in to the mouse over all the years.

A great mouse though! Been through a lot.

From the first time I saw it to this day, I always thought that the texture underneath the logo looks like a skull. Somehow even like a familiar skull.. MEDIEVIL! That's the reason I just don't like but love this piece of plastic.

I have this - 12 years going strong. Sinks my heart it will need to be replaced.

I'd happily spend three times as much on it for the same product, but even now at that price I doubt anything in the market gets close. Sad times.

Edit: 12 years constant use - took it into work for daily use for several years. This really is the GOAT mouse.

Bought mine when I built a PC in ‘08. Another PC and two MBPs later, still use it daily for work. Had a scare recently, but took it apart, used compressed air on the little gaps in the middle of the scrollwheel and it’s back to 100%.

Not a fan that I have to use third party software (sensible side buttons) for the back/forward to work on MacOS, and still no idea how to make the expose button work again, but it’s still worth it to use this mouse.

Logitech is definitely not built for life material. Their older products will hold but they still have their issues. I had their products and while they were solid and well built they did fail, but after an acceptable timeframe (plastic ended up changing consistency, batteries dying pretty fast etc).

Nowadays Logitechs entry level stuff is terrible quality and will fail fast. Their more expensive stuff is a bit better but still, it's a brand I'm avoiding now after having spoken to their customer service.

Logitech simply does not belong in this thread, despite you having a great product here.

Mine died after like 10 years of use, I've been using a Logitech G502 the last couple of years. It honestly took a month or two to get over the loss, but I wouldn't go back now.

I have one. I'm using it right now. I'm actually on my second one (a spare I bought in 2007). After about 12 years of heavy use I think the wires do start to break and it starts doing really weird things.

I could probably fix (or use it for parts) it which is why I put it in a drawer. Definitely feel like I get my money's worth out of them.
