Someone may be able to correct me here but there is no buy it for life microplane grater. If you use it regularly you're supposed to replace it annually. They become dull over time and there isn't a way to sharpen them. The company Microplane makes their blades in the US and are probably the best one. I'm not sure how you're breaking them exactly, if the handle is snapping or something, that's a different story. But all said, I don't think this is a BIFL item.

I've never actually had the blades go blunt, for me the handle or casing always snapped from pressure

I really like my grater by that company too. Be careful grating though, for anyone who gets one! Be conscious of your fingers
