I think I break one of these every 6-9 months. They always seem to snap, so looking for one that is a little more robust and durable. Will also be pressing down more softly in the future.

I've never actually had the blades go blunt, for me the handle or casing always snapped from pressure

I really like my grater by that company too. Be careful grating though, for anyone who gets one! Be conscious of your fingers

...I've had the same Microplane for 13 years and it grates just as well as it did when it was new (and it took the pad off one of my fingers because I was careless).
I guess I lucked out!

The one that I have says MicroPlane on a bright green rubber handle. If you search "microplane" on Amazon it is one of the first results. It's been going strong for 7 years and I only have two scars to show for it.
The key to longevity is to lift a bit on the back stroke or the individual blades get pressed down.

I've been finding that the black grippy plastic on oxo "good grips" degenerates into a sticky crumbling mess over time. I hate their products so much.

I have had that happen with some home tools but not with kitchen stuff.

Good question, different materials probably have different triggers that cause them to degrade. I trust anything plastic less and less every day.

It’s usually oils and fats that degrade plastic, not detergent.

I bought the 5 piece all steel Microplane Pro set about ten years ago, still going strong, still sharp. They get routinely bunged in the dishwasher.

You’re not supposed to press the food down on the blade but to run the blade over the food (like planing wood…hence Microplane). The food shavings collect in the blade.

Someone may be able to correct me here but there is no buy it for life microplane grater. If you use it regularly you're supposed to replace it annually. They become dull over time and there isn't a way to sharpen them. The company Microplane makes their blades in the US and are probably the best one. I'm not sure how you're breaking them exactly, if the handle is snapping or something, that's a different story. But all said, I don't think this is a BIFL item.
