I bought an iMac in 2009 then handed it down to my dad when it no longer worked for me. He still uses it today to check his email and do some light web surfing. I’m still using one of their laptops from 2014. Th products definitely last.

I had a nano shuffle, loved it. Light weight enough to clip it to my shirt collar and run, I also used it while riding my motorcycle a lot as well because I could pause/skip with gloves on without looking.

I have one of those in my office (iPod video) New battery and a big SD card to replace the old small spinner and I have a huge music library at my disposal. Has line out dock and remote too. I love mine and use it all the time.

To be honest, their laptops have always been plagued with hardware issues. Usually it's cooling related because they're always trying to slim them down. The best made laptops are Dell Latitude and ThinkPads. I work in IT and am in frequent contact with tons of laptops.

I have this same model (in silver). Years ago, I dropped it in water, and it stopped working. I set it aside, in my cupboard of obsolete electronics, but then just recently I decided to plug it in and see what would happen, and it magically came back to life!

I had a bunch and I will like to inform you Apple lost a giant class action lawsuit for fixing obsolescence to a ridiculous amount at least once.

Some generation of products are built like tanks but are annoying as heck in terma of compatibility, and others are a scam where they have less for more.

Source: owned 5 iPods, 2 iMac's and honestly, not sure if something else prior.

So, probably just someone who wasn't happy with the product.

I have a 4th generation Nano that's orange. I bought it in 2010 from the university store when they were having a sale and after my previous Sony MP3 player died on me. I've dropped it (too many times) and it's still chugging along as my alarm clock music (plugged into an old iHome that still functions from 2010). My 7th generation Nano from 2016 is still going strong in my car, but I will admit, I miss the functionality of the wheel from the old Nano. Newer models moved to touch screen, which is fine, but I just miss the tactile feel and use of the wheel, lol.

I'm not an Apple fanatic, but I will admit that when both of these finally kick the bucket, I will be remiss to find something comparable. Every other MP3 player I've had (I don't use a smartphone for music) has only lasted max 3 years before kicking the bucket and I am hesitant to buy any of the knockoffs listed on Amazon these days.

Edit: Had derp moment; it's 4th not 4rd, lol.

I genuinely can’t believe Apple iPod’s are almost ~20 years old and were that good, yet after all these years nobody else can make a portable music device to save their life… It’s a real shame they are discontinued. I’ve used a bunch of modern “DAPs” and they are ALL garbage unless you spend like 3 grand on a totl Sony model or Astell&Kern… They are bloated with gimmicky features, use outdated software, the interfaces are laggy and cumbersome to navigate, they have poor battery performance, zero customer service because they are all based out of China etc.

Nice, I still like to use mp3 players, much better than a phone when you've got a big collection. I've got a Cowon D2 that just died some months ago that I got in 2008, it was a real tank. It could even be repaired, it just needs the power switch to be replaced.

ITunes or whatever it's called nowadays still works with every iPod, up to the 2001 first gen. Put in your mp3s/AAC/ALAC from your ripped CDs, your totally legal downloads or whatever source of audio in the library, plug the USB cable and let it do it's thing!

Because at one point, the high costs were justified in Apples quality, along with the innovation at the time. Each product they came out with was something out of the future. My old iPods/iPads/Airport Extreme router still work after 10 years. But after Steve Jobs died, things changed, the quality just wasn't there anymore, it was more or less the same exact products since 10 years ago, and any "innovation" they claim has been done by competitors like Android years before, and the costs have skyrocketed.

Thats my reasoning for not liking Apple anymore. It has nothing to do with "envy" although I'm sure some Apple users might wish to see things that way.

Apple products are difficult to repair making them hard to declare "BIFL", but they are still built like tanks and last a long time.

This year's iPhone is a lot more user-serviceable than previous models so hopefully they are moving in the right direction.

Switching to flash memory is an option and batteries are replaceable as are headphone jacks which can be another point of failure. BIFL sometimes means that something is able to be refurbished and can keep on going!

You'll be okay, just be careful when you open the housing. Even then I'm sure there are replacements if it cracks or something. Personally I'm all about my desktop setup, so much so that I gifted my old iPod Classic in exchange for help soldering together a Bottlehead Crack tube amp; great pairing with my Sennheiser 6XX.

Bought mine in 2011, a 160gb. Still have it around somewhere, but battery doesn't last long now, and it crashes quite often. I just bought a 512gb sd card for my phone, way easier

The fact that you have 3x entries for the Grateful Dead is why I refused iTunes access to my hard drive, and only used iTunes to initialize the ipod before switching to Media Monkey to manage my meticulously organized mp3 LIBRARY.

(ZERO DIGITAL PURCHASES, ZERO MONEY SPENT THROUGH APPLE)

ITunes absolutely made a mess of any complilation album or "Various Artists" like "A Very Special Christmas" volumes 1-5

Why the only one? I’d say it’s a pretty accurate example of the longevity of their products. Currently typing this on an iPhone 8 bought soon after release in 2017. Works just like brand new, though perhaps slightly reduced battery life.

I liked my 20-teens Sony Walkman. Only stopped using it because of Spotify. Maybe a little less clean of a ui but for like $50 I would still be using it but for a better, different form of media player. That'd still affect my ipod classic, which I had to pay$100 to replace 3 times (and the 4th likewise lost headphone functionality).

That’s what I’m using! The Clip Jam is such a little beast. I actually prefer it over most DAPs. It’s not as good as the old Zip which can use Rockbox, it doesn’t play flacs or do anything fancy and the bass is a little thin but it’s perfect for what I need for running or when I’m at the gym. This thing can take a beating and the battery lasts FOREVER.

It's really wild to me that there isn't a big open source project for portable media players. There's Rockbox, but it doesn't seem to be ported to many modern players.

In the radio control hobby there are like 4 major manufacturers of transmitters and they all run the same open source firmware, which gives the community control over the hardware and for the most part makes things run very well.

It would be awesome to see something like that revolutionize the portable audio scene. Someone start a software project and release a good, STM32-based reference design so that the hardware will be reliable and people can implement good features in software that can run on lots of different devices

I remember doing that.. it was like a part time job.

Still something to do while already typing away on MSN Messenger or mIRC.. while batch updating album art, track numbers, fixing typos on limewire downloads and piecing together albums from random tracks at barely dialup speed. Just for Winamp and sharing some MP3 discs.

It was like data entry gamification. Ended up running sound systems for bars I managed and working as a DJ for years, so it could've been worse.

this statement is incorrect and its not applicable to every apple product. just go to ifixit and see how easy it is to repair most. They even sell DIY repair kits for parts like batteries. I have very few apple products but they all are still working even after a decade.

They aren't. Apple is programming their phones to reject third party repair forcing the owner to go to apple for everything, meaning apple controls pricing, features and parts availability. Hugh Jeffreys does good teardown and repair assessments on lots of tech products, including apple. Regarding the other comment about iFixit, Jeffreys calls out iFixit (a sponsor) for their misleading apple repair scores and explains why.

There's a reason iTunes was considered malware for PCs. If you still have your music library, try using Rockbox instead. The website has lots of user info and the forums and r/rockbox should answer most questions.

Agreed, that no-button shuffle was garbage: small capacity, no controls, and constant shuffle so the next song was always a craps shoot. I doubt the people downvoting you ever used it or were aware of it.

The rising prices for iPods now are because a certain youtuber made it popular to refurb them during the pandemic. In 2019 you could buy the OP's 5th gen for less than $15 USD on eBay.

I do that with my phone & iTunes library of soooo much music anyway, really need to add songs, I don’t need Spotify or whatever streaming service, what a waste of money.

I got a good sense of things like brand standards from doing this. Each album had to be set up an exact way. I’d see my friends with iPods full of “Track 07s,” then feel immense satisfaction when my library looked like I bought it all from iTunes

I have 2 ipods. The 1st I bought in 2004 to take back to Iraq. It was a 6gb mini. I think those were more rare than the 4gb, or it seemed at the time. My other one is a 100gb chrome back one I bought at a pawn shop. I've replaced the battery but the hard drive went out so I need to fix that next. I like having a separate music player to hold my music when possible so as not to take up space on my cellphone. I forgot I have a tiny clip on shuffle too. It's great for mowing/weedeating. I just run the cord down my shirt & clip it on my waist usually.

Yup. Have a 2011 MacBook Pro still going! Granted, I upgraded the SSD and battery on it at one point but that was easy after watching a YouTube video on it. It’s still fast!

There are still really good music players out there. XDuoo made some really nice stuff but they seem to be pulling out because they are removing models from their website. I think I paid £80 for my X3. I wanted to upgrade to the X3II but it's been removed now. My X3 is still going strong and the battery can be repalaced if it dies.

They’re not alone, my HP laptop from 2013 still work like a charm. But I recognise that this is my only example, because usually my devices have been dead for a long time. While at Apple I often hear this kind of echo. even if I don’t really like the apple brand, I must admit that they seem to be doing strong on the durability of their hardware

I hate to be the asctually guy but.. Older iMacs are actually moderately easy to repair looking into you can even replace the gpu (mxm not pcie also it’s quite difficult ) with an newer model gpu all you need to get inside is a couple suction cups and wallah done

I still have mine, only issue with it really is that some pixels are dead in the screen. You can buy 3rd party parts for it pretty easily though. So it could last forever theoretically
