As the title says, I’d like a good pair of beard trimmers. I have very sensitive skin so I never shave with a razor. I’d like a pair of beard trimmers to replace the cheap set I have now before they crap out forever.

Andis and Wahl make good quality products. I currently use Andis professional grade trimmers after finding the Wahls home line to not be great.
Or, go look into using safety razors / wet shaving if you’re looking for a better way of shaving despite ‘sensitive’ skin.

I actually have a vintage straight razor that I restored and it does not give me razor burn. I just don’t have the time to maintain it for regular use.

Straight razors are cool but fairly high maintenance. Double edge safety razors use disposable blades that cost pennies and can potentially last dozens of shaves (or more), and also give a much more comfortable shave than cartridges once you get the hang of it. You can check out the wiki over at r/wetshaving if you’re interested.

I can recommend dorco or shark blades. Amazing japanese blades for straight razors. But there are some adjustable razors for the single blades that easen shaving. And you have to play with shaving soap.

I’ve been using Personna Platinum in my shavette and safely razor. No razor bumps or irritation. Astra are good too.

If you like using a straight razor, but don't like the maintenance I would highly suggest buying a Shavette. You insert razor blades just like with a Safety razor, just that you have the control and the precision of a straight razor.

2nd what was said earlier, give safety razors a shot.

It takes some practice to get everything right, like my first 3 or so shaves were kinda bad but once I got the hang of it I'll never go back.

You can get a legit set up for the same price any decent electric trimmer and it'll last forever, only needing to buy soap and blades for the rest of ever (both are cheap).

If you decide to stick with a trimmer, I've had good luck with a BaByliss that my barber recommended, but it doesn't get as close as I'd like.

I was pretty surprised when the wahl peanut I bought broke after a few months

Another vote for Phillips OneBlade, they trim nice & close without nicking the skin, but not so close to irritate, so long as you don't shave like a ham handed sasquatch that is.

A tip for switching to a double bladed safety razor if you do go that route though; buy a sampler pack of 5-10 different manufacturer blades & try them all, what works for everyone else, might not for you.

The online consensus when I bought mine was that the Gillette Silver/Blue & the Astra Superior Platinum were the ones to go with, best blades & most consistent.

It turned out the Astra was WAY too sharp for me, and the Silver/Blue tugged & caused irritation. I landed on the Gillette platinum & Shark Super, bought a box of the Gillette, and they are still going strong to this day.

One of the most important things too, find your interval for replacing blades. I only use mine for trimming, so I can get a solid 4-5 uses out of a blade before I need to replace it, if you go clean shaven, that might be 1-2 at most.

Good luck!

I use the Philips OneBlade! I used to suffer from shaving irritation due to sensitive skin and similar to you, a safety razor kept most of the irritation away, but messy and time-consuming. I just took off about 3-4 weeks of beard this morning with my OneBlade that is overdue for a blade replacement. It's lightweight, quick, economical and gives me a close enough shave - without irritation!

I've been using the Wahl Peanut for about 20 years. It was recommended by my hair stylist. After ten years my first one burnt out. So far the current one is doing fine. Just needs a drop of oil every few weeks.

Possible unpopular opinion, but I really recommend a corded trimmer over cordless. You can't get the same power with a battery.

I am leaning very heavily towards a corded model from a reputable company that offers blade replacements. The battery is always what dies first one the last few I’ve had.

You are seeing Wahl here a lot for a reason. They have several models for both professionals and home use and with proper oiling and cleaning, they will last you a lifetime. My beard trimmer is a over 20 years old and works perfectly on my very full Russian/German beard and is equally effective on my pubes - no dick nicks here!

I have used a Wahl Groomsman with a Li-Ion battery for roughly 20 years. I got about 12 or 13 years out of my 1st one shaving my beard and my head once ir twicea week. This 2nd one has just been the beard once a week. I oil it every few months and they make replaceable blades for them.

Wahl was mentioned here already but they produce the Moser 1400. that thing is a monster, i can only recommend it

Get something mains powered. Not some Oneblade that has a built in battery that is not designed to be user replaceable. I am sure you can replace it if you are inclined to rip it open and possibly mess about with soldering - but that isn't really the idea of BIFL.

While it may be a good razor (I know people really like them) those lith batteries do not last, hardly BIFL when you are going to be replacing blades once a month and dealing with battery degradation after 12 months.

OhLongJohnnyBravo t1_j2oxjg0 wrote

Honestly I've had my Oneblade for the past 6 years and the battery still lasts MONTHS

Plus the batteries are fairly easy to replace if you wanted to do so.

Been using the blue waterproof Remington trimmer set for around 5 years now. Just had to replace the blades a couple months ago. Battery lasts a long time. Still running strong. Use it for beard and body grooming.

I use a combination. A good and is or Wahl trimmer and a norelco for the smooth shave when needed. I have sensitive skin and don’t do well with the razor.

Babyliss has the best beard trimmers I've ever used. I do hair. They are amazing. They have replaceable blade heads that are very helpful when it comes to buy it for life.

However, if you are not doing detail work around the hairline, you probably don't need those. Wahl Peanut is a very good trimmer and perfect for what you say you want them for. The do not have a replaceable head though.

To clarify, I do not have a beard or mustache. I just like beard trimmers because it cuts short enough to be socially acceptable and doesn’t cause my whole face to break out.

Does the babyliss have different guards? I need a guard for stubble, which model would you recommend?

1

Easy_Independent_313 t1_j4r6rlg wrote

I don't remember if they come with guards because I use them with a comb so I would have thrown any guards away.

As far as model, they are all excellent tools. I like the t shaped head because I can get it in tight spaces and feel like they get closer.

Beard Trimmers don't give a Proper clean shave.

I recomment Using Blades, but not those disposable multi Blade Razors.

Try a good Shaving foam/Shaving Gel combined with a one-blade open Razorknife.

Like your Hairstylist uses. It Irritates the Skin a lot less than those Wilkinson shavers.

takes some time to get used to it but it is the best shaving you can have.

I can recommend the Panasonic ER-1421. The trimmer is built very modular, every part can be accessed and replaced easily. I bought one 2 years ago and plan to keep this one alive till I run out of juice myself!

My boyfriend got Philips Norelco trimmer years ago and us being us, we immediately lost the charger for it. That thing lasted almost 2 YEARS without needing to be charged and with fairly consistent use. I’d highly recommend it, works great and the battery is probably actually magic

Believe it or not I have actually had the best luck with manscaped buzzers. I have a really sensitive neck and thought my super expensive Phillips would be good but it doesn’t even compare to the manscaped.
