I read everywhere that people break glass ones easily or even in the first month, I will put it in my backpack along with my laptop for outdoor use so maybe glass is not the best idea.

I am just not a fan of the stainless steel metalic taste that most bottles leave, nor will get a plastic one cause that still changes the taste.

Should I just find an insulated one that will keep my bev temp always and call it a day?

EDIT: Ordered a SIGG 0.6L

Buy a four pack of Grolsch beer. They are glass bottles with a reusable & attached ceramic or plastic plug cap. I've been using mine for a very long time now.

This is actually solid advice. There is a brand of sparkly water that comes with the same ceramic and rubber style lid, but it's a 1 liter bottle.i normally use them for BBQ sauce, but have one set aside for water from the soda stream so it doesn't go flat.

raininmywindow t1_j6e1r71 wrote

If you search 'swing top bottle' you'll find that type of bottle without having to buy Grolsch :)

And you'll be able to find various sizes/volumes.

But buying the glass bottle together with a beverage usually results in way better prices compared to buying a single empty glass bottle with lid. Just buy a drink you enjoy or try something new, if the bottle design is nice enough

There are several brands that come with a silicone sleeve to cushion the glass against bumps. I have one from Lifefactory.

You could also try copper or ceramic

May I ask what brand of stainless steel you’ve been using? I found that cheaper brands taste bad while Yeti and ThermoFlask do not.

Honestly just used a "shaker" which is a stainless steel one that I drink my protein with. Smells like stainless steel and tastes like one although it's marked as "non-bad-smell retainer".

Will the quality improve if I buy a specifically made bottle for beverages?

Mtnskydancer t1_j6d9bxe wrote

I’m betting the protein is making the taste shift. If I put anything else besides water in mine, it’s a few weeks until it’s back to baseline. Try a dedicated water only bottle.

syncboy t1_j6dg9xw wrote

Yes I think that might be what’s causing the off taste.

nhart99 t1_j6d9rk9 wrote

I would say so - I had a Sigg bottle for years and can’t recall any bad tastes. You should be able to find them, it’s a Swiss brand and you can likely order from their website.

goldenblacklocust t1_j6dxedh wrote

I don’t look at brands with stainless steel water bottles, but I do look at steel quality. I only use 18/8 or 18/10 stainless steel, and I never get a taste from them. They also never rust and are super durable. I recently replaced my cracked naglene with a 32 oz 18/8 single ply bottle. I’ve been using it every day for two years and it looks brand new, but I only put water in it.

Have you tried titanium?

Ok_Walk6578 OP t1_j6cqtid wrote

First time hearing about titanium ones, just searched but don't see any of that kind in my country.

I'm Southeast EU.

spambearpig t1_j6cu41f wrote

Really? Can’t get Amazon, eBay or anything like that?

I second titanium. A nice one will be expensive, but you will no longer worry about breakage. Easy to clean and a lot lighter than glass.

this was my first thought as well. however titanium does have a taste, you can go to a camping store and lick a spoon if you've not tried anything titanium before.

I've had a klean kanteen stainless steel bottle for many years and have never had a smell or taste. Water should not be leaving any smells or tastes unless the bottle is really neglected.

Blue-Bird780 t1_j6dmwjl wrote

Lower quality stainless steel certainly does leave a taste and that “cheap metal smell” back when I would actually bother taking swag bags from work events and use the provided cheap stainless bottle I had this issue.

When I got a couple of Kleen Kanteens and a HydroFlask (I like size options) all of that disappeared.

I have a takeya glass water bottle with a silicon sleeve. The glass is pretty thick and I really liked it for a time. I just felt like it was a little heavy to carry compared to anything else.

I’ve had a couple of these for probably 8 years now. They suck to clean, but seem almost indestructible in normal use situations.

I have a Contigo Purity and it’s my holy grail water bottle. It unfortunately looks like Contigo discontinued that style, but Amazon has a few left.

The part you drink from is glass, which was important for me. I’ve dropped it a bunch of times, and it hasn’t broken! The silicone bit attached to the lid did snap after 5+ years of use when I yanked it too hard, but that’s fine.

No way I am throwing a glass water bottle into a backpack with a laptop. The same goes with a swing top cap.

I have a Takeya glass bottle.

I wouldn't describe it as by it for life. My first one lasted about 7-10 years before the plastic and silicone parts degraded to an ascetically unpleasant level.

My fav at the moment are just Voss water-bottles. Cheap. Simple.

I have a glass Contigo auto-spout. The lid and straw are plastic but the rest is glass and it’s thick/sturdy. I’ve had it for at least 5 years. I did break a previous one by dropping it in the street but that was my mistake!

I use baking soda to leach the taste or smell out of the cheap stainless stuff I have. Works really well. Dump a bunch in, fill full with hot water, shake vigorously and let it sit. Usually fixes the problem completely and sometimes permanently.

It will not help against the 'metal' taste but be sure to clean your bottle from time to time. I use a stainless steel bottle for water exclusively and they start to get funky after sometime.(keeping water in the closed bottle for more than a day is usually enough, but the funky ness is exaggerated for context) Fill it with boiling water, let it sit for a few minutes, then empty and let dry is usually enough to clean it. Like others have said, don't put protein like milkshakes or similar in the bottles. If it's a water bottle, it should be for water exclusively

I’m here to tell you that titanium has been fantastic for me. I purchased a Snow Peak Aurora bottle. Made in Japan and insanely light.

There is no aftertaste whatsoever. I have had metallic taste out of lesser quality titanium products though.

It’s expensive but it’s a buy it for life bottle IMO.

Best of luck with your search.

Starbucks coffee. You’d know it if you guys had it. It’s as big as McDonald’s. Some people say it’s crappy coffee but I love it. They have an app that allows you to do many things, just like everyone else does. But what I love about theirs is you can either use your loyalty points for coffee, food, OR merchandise. They have the best hot and cold coffee cups, water cups, many of them made by the brand “Thermos”.

Never heard of the fact they gave glass bottles haha, my bad with the wording. I checked and we don't have an app for starbucks in order to collect those points.

That’s a bummer. Well, if you’re ever in the US or Canada… Get that app, enjoy some Starbucks, collect your 400 points really quick, and get that glass bottle! Have a great day my friend! ❤️
