Hi! Thanks for letting me ask this question. I bought this razor off Amazon in an attempt to reduce the waste of throwing out cartridges and whole plastic razors. Lately it’s been getting rusty, and I thought maybe it was the blades. The recent blade change wasn’t that long ago. I’m afraid the plating is coming off. This is my first razor to use of this kind, so I’m happy to take any advice. It does hang out in the shower (I’m a girl, use it on pits and legs) I disassemble it and used some cleaner to figure out what was going on. TIA

Get a new one. The coating is coming off and the body is corroding.

Never ever use cleaner. Just use a nailbrush (mainly for soap or shavingscream residue) and water (brush every other month). Let it dry properly.

Merkur safety razors are BIFL (Solingen, Germany).

Mühle razors are good too (but not made in Germany).

Have a look at Merkur 34C (short handle) oder 23C (long handle)

Could be. Once the plating comes off they're mostly zinc alloy underneath and it corrodes after a while. You've got months though.

There are stainless steel razors - heads and handles - that will last forever.

If you don't mind buying second hand (disinfect before use) most of the vintage Gillettes are made of plated brass and also last forever. I have 100 year old razors that I still use regularly and those things will definitely outlast me.

Like others have said it looks like the plating might be coming off. I would spend a bit extra for a CNC machined razor out of stainless steel or aluminium, brass or other metal that wont corrode like cheaper plated zamak alloy will eventually. /r/wicked_edge can help you pick out one for your price range.

If you want your new razor to last forever itll be good to take apart and give a quick hand dry with a towel before putting back together and if your environment is humid to put them somewhere dryer.

yeah it sounds like you should buy a little better quality, but you are on the right track safty razors give amazingly close shaves and are awesome you will save in the long run for sure. Heck you can even buy blade sharpeners. So Don't give up and also try different types of blades they are really not all made equally. I had some real crap ones and then i go buy the generic grocery store brand and they cut 100x better.

Just get one that is made of stainless steal or just get a replacement head. I personally would recommend this seller:

https://www.italianbarber.com

But you could google the razor of your choice and buy from anyone else. I'd also grab some blades while your at it. Failing that, look for WWII razors which are made of brass and will never do this. Just avoid razors made of pot metal (get bare metal of your choice).

Look up electro plating. You can do it at home very easily. Just strip it and plate it.
