Hello BIFL-ers,

We moved into our home a year ago and the previous tenants were honestly just a family of negligent assholes. The chimney is waterlogged and needs replacing, the AC shat the bed a week in to summer, things like that. The one thing they did to improve the place was install "new" kitchen appliances (microwave, oven, dishwasher). When we first moved in I was 5 months pregnant and every time I turned the oven on it smelled awful to me. My husband was dismissive about my concerns, reasons ranging from "you're pregnant and your sense of smell is off" to "the oven is off-gassing because it's new."

A year of "off-gassing" and we finally got someone in to come and look at the appliance. Turns out it's not off-gassing, it's a cheap as shit model and the insulation is burning. I am completely devastated given my pregnancy and my now 9 month old daughter being exposed to burning insulation and all the associated shit from this piece of shit appliance. I've looked at previous posts on this subreddit and most of the BIFL posts related to ovens are for ovens that have been in use for 70 years and are still going strong. So my question is, what are current ovens on the market that aren't absolute pieces of shit?

Gas? Electric? Wall or stove combo? With cooktop or just oven?

And most importantly are you doing a remodel and if not, what width? I ask this because most of your real BIFL ovens will not be in the US 30" standard format.

imho you don't want commercial as that might require special permits and possibly some extra hardware (hoods, halon). The easy first filter is "pro-quality" not commercial.

Gas, stove combo with cooktop. No remodel just a 30" standard. We have a hood if that helps? Thanks for the advice

Majority of the major brands of ovens are good, not like a frig, washer, dryer or dishwasher due to.moving parts. We have a Frigidaire for an oven, going on 10 years with no problems.
When talking with the appliance repair man who was in to fix the dishwasher, his one comment was never use self cleaning! This is due to all makes putting the control board on top of the oven where the high heat leads to failure. His recommendation is not to let it get too dirty. And if needed spray oven cleaner is the way to go.

We've never used self clean for the oven, but have used high heat to bake bread. I know self clean is kind of a gimmick and not worth regular use but I appreciate the reminder, thanks.

I have a 1 1/2 year old Fisher Paykel induction range. It has the best oven I have ever used, and I include the bakery ovens where i worked in the past. Pry this oven from my cold dead fingers.
