Hey guys, at the suggestion of this subreddit I got a Fiskar folding spade to replace my chineseum one that broke back in November. I've sparingly used it and I noticed that the harware it comes with that attaches the spade to the handle is already rusting. Should this be a concern or should I just go down to the hardware store and get some replacement hardware?

I don't know what Fiskar claims to use as for it's fasteners, but mechanical points like that are always more susceptible to rust. Usually cleaning and oil will keep those components in working order indefinitely, as long as you keep up with it.

If it's steel and the coating was scratched, it will rust...

Tbh if it's just a fastener I wouldn't care. If it bothers you a lot just swap the sfastener, they cost a couple cents at a hardware store... Or use a stainless screw.

don't worry about it. it's a shovel. if you're really trying to be anal about it, remove the hardware and soak it in evaporust overnight, gently scrub with some 000 steel wool. Rinse, dry, reinstall.

this. Surface rusting bolts still have pretty much all their strength. Use the tool until it breaks, then go get some new bolts.

This is why I always buy Ames. They were the go to shovel company for the railroads during the 19th century and their quality still holds up today.

Of you know some basic knowledge about metal, you should know even stainless can rust. It happens when two stainless material touches each other. Like in the joint with the screw, or laying on a countertop made out of stainless steel.

It’s the mixture in the steel that determines how fast it happens. But it will always happen.

Never again, 25 euros down the drain

You could spray it with Krown Kote rust protection...

Fiskars are pretty junky.

They have nice modern design and good marketing though.

It kinda depends on the product, some of them are made in China and some are legit
