Are we concerned about 70s plastics formulas?

I think they stopped making these because of the bpa

Even if not, no thanks for plastic, especially old plastic

$25 for an old plastic pitcher. Probably could have gotten similar item that’s stainless steel at a thrift shop.

We had one of these growing up. No telling how many gallons of orange juice and kool-aid was served from it.

Enjoy it - that will last a few generations!

Yep. we had an orange pitcher and it only ever had orange juice (from concentrate) :)

Am I missing something? Is that some kind of special lid that makes this worth $25?!

Gen Z? You wouldn't understand. 🤭

1

Wet_FriedChicken t1_j5pczxq wrote

‘96 so not really sure lol. I’ve seen the lid before I just don’t know if it’s special lol. Is that plunger on top to form a vacuum and keep it sealed?

1

joshlify t1_j5pxpp6 wrote

Yes, that lid basically has a push button to seal/release the lid. The lid has 3 separate parts (as far as I remember): the lid, the button, and another clear plastic under the lid.

My wife recently bought a new Tupperware pitcher. I use it for Kool-Aid.

In the 70s my mom used it for Tang and Funny Face.

What's funny face?

blackhawks-fan t1_j3jh7t5 wrote

It's a Kool-Aid type drink mix. There were a bunch of fruit themed character mascots.

Fuck yeah the Iced Tea / Juice Jug. Got one of those with my name on it when the time comes. It was grandma's, now it's my mom's, don't see why it won't be my kids some day.

karlywarly73 t1_j3n4okl wrote

Man that brings me back. My mum used to put that diluted Miwadi orange crap in it and call it orange juice. I thaught that's what orange juice tasted like until I was about 12.

People are talking about bpa, that’s not what I’d be worried about. Not to rain on OP’s parade, but I’d be highly wary of plastics from before 1978, a lot were made with lead. There were significant amounts of lead still going into plastics into the 90s before they really improved monitoring/regulation. Google for “lead in childrens toys”

Personally, I might use some plastic objects, but not any that touched food/drink.

Buffalo_Cottage t1_j3jldbx wrote

Davmilasav t1_j3jmwir wrote

Tupperware still sells them but they cost $27 to $34 these days.

1

elfalai t1_j3jukqm wrote

My mom still has her original brown one for iced tea and orange one for kool-aid. I don't imagine the kool-aid pitcher has been used for several years but the tea pitcher still has daily use.

SouthtownZ t1_j3ku1bo wrote

Hilarious. I just downed $100 on several 1987 Rubbermaid spatulas because my mom doesn't like the new ones.

A few of them still had price stickers on the boxes. Too funny the trips these items take to get used and forgotten about and then bought decades later at a 300% markup.
