Need Some Suggestions for BIFL Bedding

My wife and I have two dogs who have become very accustomed to sleeping on the bed. Unfortunately they also like to “nest” which has led to countless sheets and comforters with holes in them. We keep the nails trimmed, but that only prolongs the inevitable.

Does anyone know of any good quality bedding that would not only be relatively resistant to our dog’s scratching, but also be comfortable enough to not make it feel like we’re sleeping under a tarp?

I'd normally suggest Frette, what I have at home, but with the dogs just get a nice cheap percale, learn to machine darn, and expect to replace regularly.

I use Amazon Pinzon in my short term rentals, they hold up well for a couple years and stay nice and crisp white in high heat washes.

Frette is crazy expensive to me. $1k for a cotton sheet set or $3.5k for linen? That's 3x more expensive than anything else I've come across, actually. What (if anything) justifies the price?

Frette basic percale is $500 a set, which on sale can be had for under $300. They feel amazing, hold up well for years, can handle a true hot wash and don't yellow over time, and are great for hot sleepers. Compared to Pratesi, Sferra, and Anichini, Frette is a great price point for that quality level of Italian looming.

I actually prefer Irish linen, it has a higher weight than Italian.

Ok, maybe their site is just weird. When I looked at the page for sheet sets there's nothing there under 1k, but when I searched for "Percale" then I found some sets in the price range you're describing, which is still expensive but much more reasonable. Although I still wonder why anyone would pay over a thousand dollars for a sheet set, unless it was truly BIFL.

Yeah I feel like at that price point I’m defiling a work of true craftsmanship just to have holes out in them. Maybe down the road though, those sheets look amazing

Frette is really nice. I stayed at a fancy hotel years ago and was like "what are the sheets and pillows!?!". I got home and ordered Frette sheets and Pacific Coast goose down pillows. Then upward spiraled. (A joyful expensive tornado of beautiful sleep).

I stand by the Pinzon percale though. They last really well, can be boil cleaned, and the hand improves over time. I think they're under $50 a set, but I do recommend hot washes over 165F. I know people are into cold wash now, but hot on white cotton bedding is best for the feel and removing any factory chemical finishes.

Site is definitely built for the higher lines.

To me it's about the hand of the fabric, the staple of the cotton, and knowing that the people who work in the manufacturing process are paid well. I do have higher priced sheets than Frette, but they're an excellent entry point to premium bedding.

I can't afford that for my short term rental where I am not in control of the usage (I've had to many sheets destroyed by stranger's hair dye or people laundering improperly), so the Pinzon sheets are good budget percale while still being a pleasant user feel.

Red Land Cotton, for sure. They hold up well to dogs because the fabric is a lot better than other companies. Then again that can probably be attributed to the company growing and ginning its own cotton vs buying it off the open market.

I have an old feather duvet for the top of the bed. It keeps the rest of the sheets and blankets in good shape

My mom made a bed cover out of heavy but relatively soft outdoor upholstery fabric to deal with this problem. Ymmv with the comfort of that and it wont last forever but it protects her duvet no problem
