Hi BIFL,

I'm in need of a big ol' bi-fold leather wallet for my husband. His current wallet more or less deteriorating at the seams/fold from decades of construction work, but now he's started a new job in a professional office setting so I figured it was time for an upgrade.

I searched through some recommendations in this subreddit but most of what I found was for slim fold wallets. He definitely prefers walking around with a small brick of a chunky wallet where he keeps all of his cards, business cards, photos, and the notes I write for him in his lunches. We just had a baby a week ago so I'd like to have a section where I can slip some wallet sized photos in before I wrap it up.

Thank y'all so much for the help!

(Also some recommendations for sturdy yet comfortable shoes for business attire would be very welcome too, he does a ton of walking/commuting with clients and will plow through a pair of shoes in a couple of months)

They started punching big holes to make it easier for less experienced leather workers to stitch in order to meet demand. Quality is not the same as it used to be.

Bummer. Mine gets put through the ringer and looks beautiful.

I second Popov.

A bit on the expensive side. Overpriced according to certain.

But it is beautiful and sturdy.

Full grain Horween leather.

If you’re Canadian… It took 5 days from me buying to them delivering across the country.

Thank you! Right now his wallet has enough dirt and sand in it to start his own little island nation.

I've been carrying the "Large Bifold" from Saddleback Leather for 10+ years. I can't recommend it enough.

If you have the budget, try asking r/leatherclassifieds! There’s a lot of leather crafters there who would be happy to make a custom wallet to your specifications. It can get pricey real quick though, especially if you go for the really nice materials.

Checkout Fossil wallets. Cheaper than a lot of the brands here but just as BIFL imo. I got one of their leather wallets 10 years ago and its got a great leather patina on it and its just getting started. It was only $40

Hanks, besides their belts the wallets are top notch too.

I’ve been using my saddle back wallet for nearly 15 years and it’s going strong. I have a previous version of the medium bifold. I’ve done nothing to maintain it and even accidentally washed it a few times. My (at the time) 1yr old also used it to teeth on for a brief session.

I've seen Saddleback recommended a few times and it being toddler resistant is a huge plus. Right now our 18 month old is taking full advantage of our newborn's feeding schedule to go full gremlin

Wallets are like handbags for the spouse, let him pick out his own unless he asks you. My wife is intelligent, good meaning, but has learned no belt, no wallet, no shoes, no tools. Just my 2 cents, but have been happily married for 40 years

My guy is very much the opposite of that, he strongly prefers that I pick out his clothes/accessories because "idk you know what's good and looks nice". The only criteria he has for wallets is "leather, black and holds all my stuff". Tools, cars, and technology/appliances are the only things he's really fussy about which is great because my only concerns about those kinds of things are: is it study, is it practical, does it look nice and will it last more than a couple of years so we balance each other out.

Carhartt makes a leather a bi fold or tri fold. I've had mine for 5 plus years and use it everyday. Spots for extra cash, card holder options, and two main spaces for cash. Cost maybe 50 bucks

I got my FIL a huge wallet like this from TUMI 7 years ago and it's still going strong

Ashland leather. They've got chunky wallets, small wallets, big flat wallets etc. etc.. All made in the US of A (Chicago) out of Horween leather.

I use one of those--got it at Kohl's. Easily going on 8 years right now.

Do you know the specific brand? Luckily there's a kohl's 15 minutes away from me.

If it was from Kohl's it was likely Levi's, Croft & Barrow or Docker's.

I have a Docker's one like this, and it's not BIFL - probably only 4 years old, the "leather" is already starting to peel on the outside.
