Maybe it could use a cleaning. Take it apart and wipe the internals down with some vinegar and then water and let it dry.

I just opened it. It is very dirty for sure. I looked at the mecanism. It is very simple. There is a small tab touching the toast level slider. I gave it a small bend. I'm letting the bottom part soak in warm water and little dish soap to soften up years of bread bits (and occasional egg roll crunchin after reheating in microwave). Will brush them off and let dry. And repost again tomorrow with the results.

We have a similar model picked up at a thrift store for $2 about 15 years ago. We just double toast ... when it pops the first time, flip the toasts upside down and turn around (who knows if this is necessary or not, but it's fun) and slam it back down. Never really thought about adjusting it somehow 🤔

Those toasters have heating elements very much the same mechanism as an electric stove element. They are thin however. Over time they can and will get brittle and/or break and won’t heat properly. Push the lever down with nothing inside and look inside to see if you see one particular part of the element getting really bright and the rest not. Not necessarily a fix. You can buy toaster heating elements, but it would probably be cheaper just to hit up a goodwill etc and look for another old toaster.

But sentimental value may be more expensive than a goodwill toaster

I would never consider a toaster a family heirloom, maybe a fire hazard in the current condition.

This gives me an idea. You can diet just by using a mirror and seeing that you are eating a second copy of your food at the same time. Need two slices of bread? Eat one in front of a mirror. It'll be like you've eaten two.
