I get a crackle, like a slight break up sound similar to a pickup selector being toggled, every once in a while when I’m playing quietly on the high strings.

Probably worth opening the control plate up and taking some contact cleaner to the electronics (pots, switch, input jack), to start. Unless you have a hollow body where it's tough to get access to all of that, disassembly and reassembly should be pretty straight forward and it's really only an exercise of unscrewing the plates and screwing them back in afterwards.
