Recently accepted a summer internship and was wondering what are my options for housing. I will be in Columbia for 3 months and I'm looking for a one bedroom, one bathroom that's under $1,000. Thanks!

Don't think you're going to find anything that cheap. You'll likely need to find a place to share with a roommate.

The other thing I might mention, my SO works with interns over the summer and housing has been a big issue in the area. It's unfortunate because it has been a cause of many people having to turn down internships.

Another issue is transportation. Not sure if you'll be arriving with a vehicle, but it's usually a must. We have buses throughout the County, but they won't necessarily get you where you need to go easily.

Check with the company you're interning with.

I'm sorry, but you're not going to find even a Studio apartment for $1,000. This area is expensive. On the lower end, you're looking at like $1,500-$1,600/month, and even that would be considered a bargain.

Your best bet is to rent a room from someone.

Reach out to the company that made the offer. Their HR department should be able to point you to resources. Best bet for that cost, is probably renting a room or looking outside Columbia. Maybe Burtonsville or Laurel?

For only three months, I would consider looking at long-term hotels like Residence Inn. That's what my sister did a few years back - had a kitchen, etc.

Might be a little pricier, but you don't need to deal with all the BS of getting gas, water, electric, internet, etc. for only three months.

The intern my company had over the summer reached out to all the universities in the area, and I believe he said he had luck with umd and ended up in silver spring for a good price.

Also, a lot of students and the universities try to sublet their places out for the summer.

Realistically my best friend is renting a 1970s quality renovated one bedroom in a complex for $1780 + utilities. Under $1000 is a good budget for a room, maybe not the apartments near the mall that go for $2200-2500-2800 for two bedroom, but you can get a decent room in a family townhouse. If you have transportation you can look at basements/efficiency apartments/guesthouses in the Woodstock etc area but these most likely are going to be at least $1000-1200.

Start looking on craigslist or like other people have said contact a college to see if you can stay in empty dorms

Reach out to the company you’re working for. We’ve had employees at our company host interns in the past. Best bet in that price range is to look for someone renting out a room or a basement for the summer

You wont find a lease for 3mos anywhere near that price, most places are minimum 1yr. You can however find basements/attics/in-law suites for that, and those folks are more likely to accept short term stays. Try apartments.com or airbnb.

There are people who would rent space in a home for this amount. You should definitely post this around the internet. For example, we have a condo that is being renovated now that no one lives in and we are not selling and keeping in the family. We have a family member moving back next spring after school who we offered the place to help him out for a bit. But I would have totally let someone rent for 3 months at that rate.

There's a guy out here who sleeps in a bus stop, you might consider bunking next to him? Seriously though, I don't even think people rent out extra rooms in their homes for that cheap. Good luck though.
