It’s about time for my knives to be sharpened again, and the last place that I used butchered them. Looking for a place in hoco/Columbia that does a good job.

Thanks!

Edit: u/machweee did THE BEST job. Holy crap. I know it’s a small subset of people here probably looking for pro knife sharpening, but he is legit. Dont bother with ace, williams sonoma, etc. Go to someone that this is a passionate hobby for. Super reaonable, quick turnaround, but most importantly a better than factory edge on my Mac knives. They are scary sharp. Molecular slice sharp. Plus, honestly, one of the kindest people Ive met in a long time.

mods, if this type of post isnt allowed, please let me know. Just thought id give a shout out for a really awesome awesome job. Thanks man!

Hey there. I make and sharpen knives as a hobby. The problem you run into is that most places use machines so they can crank through lots of knives. They do a decent job but they will not get your knives “scary sharp”. I’ve been toying with the idea of selling my services.

I use a pretty expensive manual sharpening system that puts a precise angle and a mirror edge on your knife using high-end Japanese water stones. Happy to sharpen your knives for you this weekend if you’d like. You can Venmo me what it’s worth to you after you get home and try them out. Not happy? Don’t pay a cent :)

Totally understand! I have a couple hand forged Japanese knives that are really hard to come by that I wouldn’t trust with anybody (including myself) except a master sharpener. I’m no master, but I think I’m pretty darn good haha. Most of the knives I sharpen are Shun/Wustof-grade or below.

Send me a DM if you decide you want to drop them off!

There's an automated system at Ace on Rt 40.

Appreciated, but it was the guy at ace (not a system though, maybe I should give it a shot) that destroyed them last time.

Ugh yeah I went to a guy out in Severna Park or something years ago but don't remember any details to share. I just remember seeing the machine at Ace - it's kinda like one of the key making machines.

It's not in Columbia but I use Burrbenders. They are normally set up outside Homestead Gardens on Mondays/Fridays (check their website) but they also have a brick and mortar location. I find it worth the drive and I make a morning of it when I go.

Thank you for your suggestion. I’ve also been meaning to find a place and after looking this up, this seems like the best option for my chef and carving knives.

I wish I would just sharpen them myself, but it’s such a dedication and skill to have a proper set up and execution.

Clark's Ace hardware (one in EC and a new one in Columbia) have a ReSharp machine- automatic sharpener.

You also just missed this guy who goes to David's Natural Market once a month. https://www.proedgemd.com/cal

Someone told me a while back that Bass Pro in Arundel Mills mall has a person that sharpens knives. I haven’t personally used them though and I realize this isn’t in HoCo…..

Buy the electric knife sharpener with three stages at Williams Sanoma. Works perfectly. All my knifes are razor sharp. Pays off over the years.

The new Ace hardware by Wegmans has a knife sharpening station. I haven't tried it out but could be worth a shot.

Well shucks! So glad you like them. Was really nice to meet you! Those MAC knives are really a joy to sharpen :) I've noticed it's really hard to find sharpening services that don't involve someone putting a mediocre edge on your knife using a machine. Manual sharpening with water stones creates an amazing edge. Most places won't do it, because it takes much much more time and care than a machine.

If there are any other folks who want to give my services a go, shoot me a DM. Will give same deal as I gave OP. Suggested fee is $10/knife/pair of kitchen shears. If the knife needs tip repair, major chips, etc., a few bucks more would be appreciated!

You can shoot me a Venmo after you bring them home and decide whether or not my services met/exceeded expectations. If you find yourself unimpressed, no payment necessary and no hard feelings!
