Maryland used to (apparently still does) charge a sales tax difference between the rate where it was registered and what the current MD rate is. It's an effort to avoid having people but cars in low tax neighbor States, but it seems rather petty to me. It sounds like that's what they're hitting you for

IDK how they calculated it but they hit me so much i wasn’t prepared for that

This is around what I had to deal with when I moved from Indiana and brought my cars over. I sadly had 3 cars to register and it was around $900 per vehicle. Luckily though, after that I haven't had anything near that bad and it's about $200 every 2 years which is much more manageable.

Not sure about coming from out of state, but I recently bought a new car and I paid about $300 total, and that included the dealer’s handling fees.

Why is it so much? I, too, will need to transfer my registration to Maryland (coming from Ohio) and when I looked into it the cost was a little under $300. My girlfriend got the same number when looking into transferring her registration from North Carolina to Maryland.

As others noted MD will charge you the difference in the sales tax that you paid and what MD sales tax would be. As military coming from overseas with a car that I bought through AAFES (and paid no tax on originally) it really hit my pocketbook. It's a bullshit policy and needs to change.
