Cinco de mayo in Columbia...
robdcx OP t1_j4xpaon wrote
Interesting. I've had good Peruvian in Catonsville. Any Salvadorean places you recommend?

The food truck el sabor chapin is hands down the best Mexican food in columbia

So I really enjoy cinco de Mayo, but idk if it’s the best Mexican food (I’ve never really had “authentic” Mexican food). Over the summer a new place opened called salt and lime, I love the food from here.

Lime and Salt Taco Bar was good to me.

It’s Guatemalan not Mexican.
zkb327 t1_j4xw5wb wrote
“Mexican food” in the US is not Mexican cuisine, and even though the guy who owns this food truck is Guatemalan and the name is Guatemalan, it is not Guatemalan cuisine. It’s US Mexican food. They sell cheeseburgers for Christ’s sake.
I think OP will like it.

Ernesto's in Ellicott City is great, the shrimp enchiladas are delicious.

2nd vote for Taqueria Los Primos. The actual restaurant or the food truck in Ellicott city, both are awesome.
Shanamat t1_j4xwynb wrote
I think Cinco de Mayo is more tex-mex than authentic Mexican.

Taco Bell on Snowden is hard to beat.
bwelsh822 t1_j4y13e3 wrote
In the area ? Cinco De Mayo. Not true Mexican by any means but great TexMex and the prices can’t be beat. Sure other places are good too… but seem expensive to me.
For tacos - Lime & Salt on Dobbin is AMAZING. Truly. Best tacos outside of Mexico in my opinion. Fresh and authentic. Great prices too.
sublimethought5 t1_j4y1yfi wrote
It's ok, but nowhere near enough seasoning or flavor.

I despise Ernesto’s. Low quality but not cheap. The fajitas are garbage.
gravitygauntlet t1_j4y8y31 wrote
I was thinking Taqueria la Benedicion (food truck) in Jessup was Salvadorean-run for some reason, but there's a bunch of pupuserias in the area too.
PamperedPotato t1_j4yb21n wrote
Taqueria la patrona (truck) on Stevens forest rd has good tacos, they also have burritos & quesadillas & some other stuff I can't recall. Occasionally they have mole tamales.

It is not Guatemalan. Source - My Guatemalan wife.

Tampico grill in Laurel. I've been going there for 20 years and it's a real hidden gem. Looks are deceiving for sure, but it's the best tex-mex I've ever had
theMangoSloth t1_j4ykt99 wrote
Also recommending Taqueria Los primos. I've had just about everything on the menu and never had a bad meal. I strongly recommend the Tortas or Chilaquiles.

Mi Pueblo in Glen Burnie. Really great food. If that’s too far, La Palapa in Old Ellicott City is good.
the_pi_guy t1_j4ypg77 wrote
Another gem just down the road from Mi Pueblo is a place called La Fondita 2. I personally like their tacos better than anything I've had in the Columbia area.

LJ_Wanderer t1_j4yxkfl wrote
None of the local food rises to the level of the Mexican food you can get in the southwest; I chalk it up to locally sourced ingredients. That being said La Papalapa in Ellicott City is our favorite with La Papalapa Too is a close second ( and my preference for lunch).

It's good, especially for this area.

It's Tampico Grill and it's not even that close. My wife and I have had damn near every restaurant and truck in Howard County and nothing touches Tampico. Pro tip - get the steak burrito or taco or whatever. They have the best steak around.

Mi Casa off St. John’s and route 40. Much better than Ernesto’s down the street.

Theres just a plethora of better Mexican options down there. Taqueria Los Primos is solid. Quesadilla had too much cheese for me but the chicken tacos were good

https://pollofeliztaqueria.com/ - Route 40, Ellicott City.
Food is fantastic, it's the best I've found so far. I've had trouble w/ the pick up option on Door Dash or maybe it was Uber Eats. So, if you're doing a pick up it's best to call instead.
UnreasonableDoubter t1_j557wvi wrote
I haven't tried Mi Casa yet but I was pretty disappointed with Ernesto's.
UnreasonableDoubter t1_j558es1 wrote
I wouldn't say despise but there are far better options in either direction on Route 40 within 5 minutes.

Mi vida or dlena in DC. Clavel in Baltimore. Most others are just simply chains or not good.
Although for a suburb location Chi-Bal in Laurel is significantly better than Tampico, la-palapa, cinco de Mayo, or any other option presented.

Just tried Cinco de Mayo last night based on recommendations from this sub. Food was good, great service and ambiance. This will likely become one of our favorites.
gravitygauntlet t1_j4xos0i wrote
It doesn't seem like there's as much Mexican food here since a lot of it is also Peruvian, Salvadorean, etc. but we've consistently had good experiences with Taqueria Los Primos. As long as they're not super packed the food is done pretty quickly too.
