Hello, I’m turning 26 soon and need to find my own health insurance. Idk if this area has doctors who take one insurance more than the other or what. I was going to go with blue cross blue shield care first. Do most doctors take that in this area? Also if anyone has a a plan that they love that’s a PPO plan let me know. I have health issues that really need to be taken care of despite my age, so I want good quality insurance.

Thanks for any advice!

Bonus for PCP recommendations because I moved here with my fiancé in August.

Carefirst is a good bet here, most doctors take it. You won't find a lot of smaller allied health professionals taking it because their reimbursement rates are utterly abysmal. I actually have no issues getting my pick of specialists with my HMO because between Annapolis and Baltimore. There is a ton to choose from.

My friends a travel nurse in Baltimore Maryland but he got a PPO plan from a health broker in Baltimore & he loves it. He just used that plan all the way in Florida since he had COVID.

Kaiser might be a good option if you want something that’s a bit more affordable and streamlined. Kaiser doesn’t have the best doctors but everything is in house, which makes everything from the scheduling of appointments to picking up a prescription really easy as it’s all from the same place. There’s a Kaiser clinic here in Columbia. I will caution though that Kaiser isn’t the best if you want flexibility with selecting a specialist, as Kaiser requires that you first get a referral from your PCP, and I found that my PCP was extremely reluctant to make those referrals (which is probably one of the ways they save money and keep premiums low).
