Most likely because it's impossible to get kids to stop vaping in the bathrooms. Personally I don't think locking bathrooms is the right solution, but I truly get the frustration from staff.

In my day (mid-1970s, PG County), they just took the doors off the bathrooms, so it was easier to catch the smokers.

Suitland, but we moved to AA Co. at the end of my junior year, so I didn't graduate from there.

The 7781 stand for HS and college grad years? I went to U. of Md after graduation

Maybe I’m dumb, but how do the kids go to the bathroom if they’re all locked?

eli-the-egg t1_j78rduu wrote

They only lock certain ones, to funnel the students to certain ones that can be supervised outside. Kids are less likely to try/get away with stuff if they know a teacher can pop in

Are they doing something different from before? When I was at Centennial (1999-2002), bathrooms except the ones in the locker rooms or by the front office were locked during the day. Similar reasons.

I went to Wilde Lake from 04-08 and I don't remember any bathrooms being locked.

We had nicotine on the run. Smoking rates were crashing. Looked like we might live in a country that was nearly nicotine free... Then these vapes come along. Decades of public health work get cancelled out in half a generation.

Does anybody know if this is just Long Reach or across all high schools?

FineWinePaperCup t1_j76rwqu wrote

You may want to clarify your question. Is what just long reach?

  • bathrooms locked?

  • substance abuse?

  • a parent night on the issue?

We could break the poster down line by line but I think the main question is if the bathrooms are being locked only at Long Reach or all HoCo high schools. The impetus for the flyer seems to be the bathroom-locking issue.

FTR, I was completely serious about my question. I could not discern what you were asking about being just long reach. May have seemed obvious to you, but wasn’t to me.

I understand. The line about the bathrooms being locked isn't emphasized on the flyer but that is what stood out to me. Just a matter of perspective.

Probably all high schools. Substance abuse is getting more common among teens unfortunately

wildpolymath t1_j77mma4 wrote

They’re doing this in Oakland Mills Middle, too. Shut down some of the bathrooms due to misuse.

Limerase t1_j79ul0y wrote

The high school as well, not that they're doing anything about it. You walk down the hall and get a contact high from the weed stink.

I grew up in Columbia but now work at a k-8 public school in philadelphia. All bathrooms except the ones by the cafeteria are always locked. For what reason I’m not sure. There are probably multiple. Everyone has time allotted in their schedule to take a class bathroom break.

rraszews t1_j79u6wr wrote

Honestly, this is the first time i realized that the bathrooms being locked was abnormal. They kept them locked up tight back in the '90s in my small-town high school. Sad they're still doing it.

I have teenagers at another HoCo high school. They say vaping in the bathrooms is very common.

Fascinating. Private schools don’t have locks on the bathroom…..absolutely fascinating.

I can assure you kids in private schools are abusing substances, perhaps even moreso in my experience with them

I had no comment about that. My entire comment was about the public schools having locks on their bathrooms. Just amazing to me.
