Hello!

My partner and I are looking to move into an area around Columbia, MD, and we found a potential place in Oakland Mills, specifically near the Talbott Springs Elementary School and LA Mart.

I did research online that the area should be fine in terms of like crimes and stuff, but would love to hear from any locals if possible. Thanks so much in advance!

It's a nice place. Good for families, places close early. You can walk around the area at any time of day, it's perfectly safe. Oakland Mills is pretty quiet. Convenient to live so close to the LA Mart. Don't expect too many things to be open past 9 pm around here though.

The oakland mills village center is maybe the best in columbia. LA mart has a great selection of food for prices that are waaay lower than any of the “american” chains around here (or even h-mart and lotte), and in general the village center seems like its kinda on the upswing, with more stores opening up in the area over the past few years. Currently theres a salvadoran restaurant thats going to open soon, and a jamaican food truck that comes by on sundays.

Pizzaman also has really good pizza and south asian food so theres a lot of variety.

I live in the area you are describing. Been here 3-4 years. Love it. The trails are great. No more riff/raff than other places. Great location in Columbia. Close to 29 and Merriweather and Lake Kit. LA Mart is a good option for cheap food and Latin/Asian ingredients. I will say the village center is kind of crap though. Doesn’t have the investment in it it needs. There is a fine liquor store. But, most of the shops there are not the best In their class. That being said, best In Class options (pizza, bagels, grocery, food trucks,Chinese carryout) are easily reachable with a short drive. Overall love the area and highly recommend it.

Edit: riff/raff not riff/raft lol.

I live here(Autumn Crest). I like the area well enough though I hate having to drive that long road every time I want to get to the mall when its like, right next to me horizontally. I haven't felt unsafe here, and from what I gather this apartment complex is one of the better ones in this village.

OM is a great community! We have awesome trails, a great group of folks who are warm, welcoming, and fun, and it’s safe. We are diverse, full of neat people (beekeepers, artists (even one that sculpts with chainsaws), chicken keepers, hot sauce divas, and that’s just a short list.

Our hood gets shade from some of the other bougie, judgy neighborhoods in Columbia, but don’t mind them. My partner grew up here, their parents lived her for 40+ years, and we bought the house from them when they retired… because this place is special.

Also echo what others say about LA Mart being awesome and Pizzaman is insane good.

The la mart shopping center is walking distance! i love it. Pizza-man (pizza, american cuisine, great indian and other south asian cuisine, and mixes like chicken masala pizza or tandoori wings), a great chinese restraunt, a new mexican place, a good haircut place, ice skating, community center (honestly idk what the barns are), farmers market every sunday, walking trails going all over (bike to the mall and the lake!). la mart has a ton of variety.
