Hello fellow Nutmeggers! About ten years ago, I was inspired by the "Racial Dot Map" created by the New York Times and decided to go through a similar exercise for Connecticut. Back in 2013, I created this map showing the majority racial and ethnic group, by population density for each Census Block in Connecticut. For reference, Census Blocks are statistical units created by the federal government to visualize population and housing data at the hyperlocal scale. There are about 50,000 Census Blocks in Connecticut, or roughly one for every 75 people or so. With the 2020 Census data recently released, I decided to make an updated version based on the 2020 Census using the same methodology and color scheme. You can view the larger version of that map here. A few things of note that stuck out to me were the different enclaves in our major cities (most evident in Hartford and New Haven) as well as impact that our municipal boarders have on our overall demographic patterns (for example, Waterbury and its surrounding communities). While I will let you each draw your own conclusions, I hope you find this visualization informative and fascinating.

I love data visualization. While it’s no surprise that our cities are the more diverse, there were a couple surprises here. I didn’t expect Rocky Hill to be that colorful!

Our state has historically been, and continues to be, very segregated :(
